“It’s the nightmares that always seem to become the realities.”
The house of candles is all but extinguished and Derek is on a gurney in SGH dead.
Thank God it was just a dream. I breathed a sigh of relief when they share a sweet smile over Cristina in the opening group scene. Ahhh… MerDer.
I also enjoyed the first scene with Derek and Rose, she is being nasty, YAY! Then there is no hope for reconciliation! I’m so happy! I also love that Mark keeps encouraging Derek to break up with her “professionally”. That’s sound advise from a man-whore.
The car accident victims in the episode are great similes to how Meredith is feeling. The women in the accident all have loving relationships with their husbands, but even after 40 years of love and life together, one wife still cheats on her husband with her best friends husband. Next thing you know Meredith doubts herself and her relationship, because if after 40 years you just cheat on your husband what is the point? To me that is a valid point. I mean what is the point? But I think what Meredith needs to understand is that life is about choices. Life is about the choices you make and how they affect everyone you know. She spends the whole episode wondering if her and Derek can make it, drawing conclusions of her relationship to others relationships. She tells Cristina that:
“They did it, I can do it.”
She wants to marry, to commit; she leans “into the fear to get my happy ending”. She bites the bullet and asks Derek to move in with her. But she takes it back later when she finds out about the cheating car accident victim. She takes it back and she tells Derek, and Derek is great about it. Which is VERY surprising. I can’t understand why he was so supportive. I mean we have had glimpses of Derek the ‘one who understands Meredith’ but we haven’t seen it lately. But here he understands that he needs to take baby steps with Meredith and their relationship. Which allows Meredith to see that he loves her, he understands her and they are in it for real this time, so they do decide to move in together. Which makes my heart flutter. I’m glad that so far this season they have got their sh!t together.
I’d also like to digress from MerDer and talk a little about my 3rd fave character, Cristina. She is wonderful in this episode. I’ve red the forums and I know that everyone thinks she is being unsupportive of Meredith, but all Meredith did for the first hour of this episode was talk about how she was continually changing her mind about how she was continually unsure about being with Derek. It’s confusing, but true. If I were Cristina I would have told her to shut the hell up too. I would have told her that I hated hearing about Derek, I hated hearing about the babies, and the Mrs Shepherd and she should just SHUT UP!
I mean honestly. Who does Meredith think she is? Did Cristina talk all day every day about Burke? No she didn’t!! She barely said a word about him. Not a peep. So I am very surprised that Cristina didn’t say more and sooner. But off the topic of the “shut up moment” in this episode we see Cristina grow. She realises that she is not the best resident in the program. She is human, she makes mistakes and she has made stupid sacrifices by way of skipping out on every other specialty except cardio. At least now, thanks to Hahn (who she thought could never teach her) she knows. And she will be a better surgeon for it. I also enjoyed the realisation that she had, it was only a flicker, but she realised she had been hogging all the glory from her interns when they were trying to read her chest films. They had no idea what they were doing and hopefully from this moment on we will see a better teacher in Cristina. I was also blown away by the kiss. The Owina kiss. (I’ve branded them Owina… let me know if you can come up with better). It was magical and great to see Cristina back on top.
Anyway to round up my review of the Season Premiere, I really enjoyed it. I loved everything that happened, I was saddened by Alex’s moves at the end of the epi with the “anonymous” brunette. But happy that is bought a little bit of closer to all of us Dizzie fans. I’m glad that he finally got to see her in The Dress.
Overall I enjoyed it, there were a few unbelievable bits (like Cristina’s icicle not melting), but I loved it. It feels like to me that the old Grey’s is back. I’m ready for more. Bring it on Shonda.
