Patrick: “This I Can Create!”

Hey Gabblers!

Patrick talked about the difference between Racing & Grey’s Anatomy!

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — The moment he said it, I knew some who heard it might misconstrue his intent. “Grey’s Anatomy” star Patrick Dempsey, in discussing his other role as a race car driver, chronicled in Velocity’s “Patrick Dempsey: Racing LeMans” (10 p.m. Wednesday), was asked if he was bored with “Grey’s” and if anything could compare with racing cars.

“Probably not, no,” Dempsey began. “And I’m not necessarily bored with the show. I’m very grateful that I have a show that’s been on for ten years. But I’m not the creator. I’m not the writer. This I can create, I can write. It’s a trade, quite honestly. And that’s fine, you know. And when you’re on a show that’s been on for ‑‑ we’re coming up to 200 episodes ‑‑ it’s about surviving. And you find ways to turn yourself on with the material that you’re given. But it’s like being in a band. You have a specific note that you play, and that’s what you do. So you just try to play that as well as you can. So for me now it’s much more just discovering in the moment. There’s not a lot of homework that goes into it. You learn your lines, and you try to be present and try not to get caught acting. And you, you know, I’m grateful I have the gig, but it’s not the same as being in a race car. It’s just not.”

To some ears, this may sound like a diss of “Grey’s” but really Dempsey is just being honest. Any job gets old after a while, even one with the perks of starring on a broadcast network hit.

  1. If ABC Entertainment Division was listening they would understand that he deserves to get more airtime and better storylines. When he and Ellen were more the stars of the show, the show was a big hit. Now Greys is put on the back burner for Scandal, Greys is not even given the same advertising. Shonda brought in a bunch of interns nobody cares about and she basically almost ruined the show. The originals are given the dumbest storylines. I’m still a fan because I just can’t give up on it. But go back and look at the first few seasons an d you will feel all nostalgic for how great the show was. I bet all the originals would love to go back to those days. Don’t blame Patrick. He’s just being honest and nobody who can change things is listening.

    • @jr, I couldn’t have said it better myself ;-) Totally agree!

    • @jr, A lot has changed in the world of TV since the first few seasons of Grey’s Anatomy. There is much more competition from cable and the networks that didn’t exist back then. This is why new characters are brought on and they bring new viewers with them. Not every viewer is a MerDer or other original fan. I never liked the show until Season 4 and I watched a few episodes from day 1 when the show first aired. I grow weary of this arrogance from “original” fans who constantly bash everyone else who joined this show later. The originals are getting old. What more is there to tell about them? I look forward to the interns getting more exposure.

  2. @Abby, as soon as the originals are gone, this show is history. Anyone who thinks otherwise is delusional.

    • @jr, I agree. I enjoy some of the newbies (Jesse Williams for example) but not others (the new interns). As much as people want to argue, no Grey’s without MerDer.

      • @Sherlock, I agree totally. I love Ellen but for sure when Patrick leaves I’m gone.

  3. A Patrick not interested Greys, or an actor, the only important thing for him is the money you can get from it. What a disappointment.

  4. I think it is refreshingly honest! ANYONE that has worked a job for 10 years is going to find it to be a bore. However, like many of us, on a smaller scale, Dempsey has to work to feed his passion, which is racing. Do I think he could have said it in a better way? Most definitely!

As far as the compliant that he doesn’t get enough air time, that is due to the Shonda, the writing staff, and other actors working around his racing schedule. It really started with S9 and this upcoming season that they do as much as they can to work around his racing schedule, which sometimes means he will get less airtime because he isn’t available for filming.

It seems like right now he is getting the best of both worlds. Although, it will be interesting to see if he chooses to stay on after Season 10.

I actually think if the writers do it right, that they can keep Grey’s going. I’m glad that pressure isn’t on me. Remember people said when T. R Knight left, the show would be done. The same for Heigl. It was too big of a loss too close together. That was 3 seasons ago. I don’t think any one person is the show except maybe Ellen, but if the storyline(s) were worked properly for her departure then I do believe the series could go one without her. Dempsey is wonderful, but if truly doesn’t want to be there, then I would rather watch an actor that wants to be there.

It’s hard to have an opinion about the new interns because the truth is we don’t know them. My first instinct is to not like them because they are new and invaders. However, remember Alex in the beginning. He was so awful! Think about Alex now! I wouldn’t want to have Grey’s Anatomy without Alex! His transformation has been amazing! These interns are basically blank slates that can go a million different directions with tons of new stories. I say bring it on! They can interact with our veteran group of doctors as we learn more about them and we see what’s going on with our veteran group of doctors! The interns provide endless possible story lines. I hope they are used to the full advantage!

    I can’t wait for Season 10!

  5. @PugMomma, I think this was written by Shonda. And no, noone said the show was going down when Kathryn Heigle left. I was glad to see her leave. I do miss George and again Shonda punished TR for not being happy with his lack of airtime. You can’t tell me that they cannot work around Patrick’s racing schedule and give him more airtime. It’s called a work around which companies do all the time to achieve their goals. And no we didn’t hate Alex, there was always a glimmer of redeeming hope with him which I don’t even care about some of these characters that Shonda throws in. Patrick never said he hated being there, he’s always said he’s very grateful for the show. He just said he has more control over what he is creating with his racing than he has with the show. People need to realize that Greys is a crowd pleaser in many other countries and one of the reasons is that Patrick goes to these countries to race and he’s a great advertiser of the show there. I really wish the powers to be (ABC Entertainment) would understand this.
