My dear Cristina and Owen fans,
I hope you’ve all had a wonderful summer. I know that we look upon Season 10 with sadness now that we know of Sandra Oh’s decision to leave the show. But we have a full season’s worth of Cristina Yang before we have to say goodbye. And that means, we have 24 episodes to come to terms with the fact that the romance we saw begin with a surprising and passionate kiss back in season 5 will most likely come to an end.
There’s something to be said about having time to prepare yourself, and there is so much we can see happen in 24 episodes. Maybe it’s not what we had dreamed for them when Cristina and Owen first came into existence, but it’s something. (And let’s face it, we all realized that we weren’t going to get what we wanted in season 6.)
Even though Cristina is leaving, we still have Owen. Even though it would be hard to see him with someone else, as this character was specifically designed for Cristina, it doesn’t mean that it is impossible. After all, many had thought that Cristina could no longer have a love interest after Burke, but Owen proved that wrong. (Though, ideally, I think it would be fine to see Owen concentrating on being a father.)
In an ideal world, they will leave the door open to Cristina and Owen. They did it in CSI with Grissom and Sara, so it’s not like it’s unprecedented. And it appears as though Sandra Oh wouldn’t be opposed to the idea of recurring. But, as we have learned long ago with this show, always go in with low expectations.
I’m writing this because I thought we could all use a little cheering up. So, to do that, let me tell you why I am not wallowing in depression over it.
First of all, whenever I think of Cristina and Owen, I think of the many wonderful people I’ve met online. I’ve become great friends with many of the people on the discussion boards and the forums. And these friendships will outlast the show. Second, because I was inspired by Cristina and Owen’s relationship, I started writing blog posts (which you already know) and fanfiction. This helped give me the courage to pursue this on a professional level (thus how I went from my original career path to my current one in Los Angeles). Third, Cristina and Owen introduced me to the wonderful performances of Sandra Oh and Kevin McKidd, whom I hadn’t been too familiar with prior to their stints on Grey’s Anatomy.
So, let’s remember these happier moments as we see what happens. I’ll still be here during the season. So, until the season premiere, I leave you with these questions:
1. What do you hope for Cristina and Owen at the end of this season? How would you send Cristina off?
2. What are the happiest memories you have regarding Cristina and Owen in the show? In the fandom?
3. Why did you fall in love with Cristina and Owen in the first place?
4. Has Cristina and Owen’s relationship – or this fandom – affected you in a similar way?
5. Will you still watch Grey’s Anatomy after Cristina leaves? How many more seasons do you think this show has?
6. What should I write about after season 10, since I am the Cristina and Owen reviewer? Or better question, should I continue writing?
