The title says it all. Everybody’s crying. This is going to be harder than I thought it was going to be. I came in, thinking I had steeled myself to the reality that Sandra Oh is leaving this show and that I was ready to let go of this show – and say a final, bittersweet farewell to Cristina and Owen. However, these past few episodes have proven that I am still attached to these two, which has honestly been a surprising emotional response.
This season premiere was a shocker. And if that is the last time we’re going to see them do the wumpity wump, I guess I’m glad we got to see them end it on a high note. What really got to me was the sincere, saddening end where Cristina finally realizes that this is not fair to either of them. It’s time to take that step toward moving on – as hard as it is to do so.
These two are going through so many changes and have to learn not to rely on each other anymore, and each time they take that one step away from each other, my heart breaks. Sandra Oh said in an interview (which you can watch here) that she can’t imagine Cristina with anyone other than Owen. And I believe that to be true. Same for Owen, but we’re seeing that he is listening to Cristina and trying to be open to new possibilities. For me, that is a true demonstration of Cristina’s love for Owen. She’s letting him go because she knows that he needs something more than her. Though, honestly, I think he doesn’t need more than her. But he won’t know that till he at least tries, and he deserves to see if it’s true. For Cristina, I think Owen is all she needs.
I have such mixed feelings about Emma. I don’t like what she represents, but I have been a huge fan of the actress. (She was in Queen of the Damned, and I’ve liked her ever since.) Still, my affection for Marguerite Moreau is but a speck compared to my love for Sandra Oh. I don’t know what the future holds for Cristina and Owen. And judging from the interview that Sandra gave Michael Aussiello, it doesn’t seem like we’re going to get the happily ever after we want for them. (That ship has sailed, sadly.) But the most I can hope for now is that there is a chance that they leave the door open to the two of them reuniting down the road. They did it on CSI (Sarah and Grissom) and ER (with George Clooney and Juliana Marguiles’ characters). Maybe, when the show finally comes to an end, we’ll see Owen and Cristina finding themselves together again, finally in the right place for each other.
If we’re talking about how this season is doing in being a wonderful farewell to this relationship, I think that the show is doing a truthful, realistic job of it. And because of this, we will get the types of scenes that are up to par to the acting talents of Kevin McKidd and Sandra Oh. As we know, they’re just too damn good at the drama and the angst. And as a side note, I’m loving how much love Kevin and Sandra are showing each other in the media. What’s really hitting home with me is that I feel like I can see their real sadness over them no longer working together every day in their acting.
Okay, time for a check in with my fellow Cristina and Owen fans.
1. How are you taking this season so far?
2. Do you still have hope for Cristina and Owen to have a relationship down the line?
3. Are you enjoying the fact that Sandra Oh is being more in the public eye as this is her last season on the show? (She got a Twitter!)
4. What do you think of Emma? Do you think that Cristina will also find someone else this season?
5. How has it been seeing Cristina getting back into “amazing teacher” mode?
6. Optional: I haven’t talked to many of you over the break. How is life?
Take care now,
