10×06 “Map of You”
Written By: William Harper
Directed By: David Greenspan
“Researchers are currently working to make a map of the human brain.”
And we are greeted with a Derek voiceover, which I will never object to. A cute McFamily morning moment as Derek studies Zola’s artwork. She gives him an idea for his brain-mapping project, which after taking a sip from the infamous red mug, slides the scene to him and Callie working on the start of their trial together. The Der-ologue continues about how things are all connected with scenes flashing with Derek in surgery, then showing how this new idea works in the first patient, Mikey.
Kind of acting as background to Cristina and Owen until she is noticed, Meredith is seen deciding on what research project to start while still giving Cristina the cold shoulder. Awkward….
Then Meredith stops by Webber’s patient room, to ask Bailey about which project she should decide on. As Bailey spouts off this little speech how Mer is a second year attending, therefore, she is “peeing on trees”, Webber pipes up that the portal vein project was Ellis’. He mentions it was in one of her mom’s journals, where Mer just says crap and walks off.
“I have a mug like that.”
Derek catches up with Callie, informing her they tested the sensors in Mickey’s head. Callie has a little word vomit, but ends up telling Derek she doesn’t want to go forward with the trial. Derek gives his best “someone beat my dog” face, telling Callie he doesn’t have time to do it by himself.
“Meredith and I are in over our heads with kids and she needs time too.”
Callie tells him basically no harm, no foul, but Derek knows Mickey will be devastated.
With an out of breath Jo giving her her mom’s journal, Meredith tells Callie about her struggle between the two research projects. #TheStruggleIsReal Total Mer not wanting to do anything her mother did, Callie tells her to still go with the portal vein project.
“It’s your story…. That stuff writes itself. Invest in your brand.”
“You make me sound like a soft drink.”
Telling Callie it’s the perfect reason…not to, Meredith hands Shane the journal, telling him to enjoy.
Shane then enters a room, occupied by Derek. As he asks him if he could switch specialties, Derek KIND OF apologizes for how he treated Shane, with the whole Heather-is-better-than-you issue. As Shane tries to understand, Derek notices the problem in Mickey’s scans. Derek brings up the brain glue, which helps out Cristina later in the episode, courtesy of Shane.
Derek is letting Mickey know that nothing can be done, and the study is ending. Mickey wants to keep with the testing, and for Derek just to operate on his tumor. Derek keeps with the dangerous tactic, and Mickey then throws a curveball. If Derek wants to have his sensors back, he has to take his tumor as well. Well, dang.
Coming up with the many reasons as to why surgery, radiation and glue won’t work, Derek tells Callie she has to convince Mickey to give up the sensors. Derek then confronts Callie on why she isn’t going forward with the project. He accuses her of letting her personal problems interfere with work, but then she spits it back at him. He tries to explain that their circumstances are different.
“You’re leaving it to support your wife, and I’m leaving it to forget mine.”
Callie then turns sad, telling Derek that he and Meredith have figured it all out. He just gives her his best McDreamy sad face, turns to leave, but not before Callie agrees to talk to Mickey.
Losing a war to a printing machine, Meredith makes it known to Bailey that she doesn’t want to spend her life being compared to her mom. Mer seems to have an epiphany, about printing a portal vein.
Wanting her mom’s journal back, Mer has a quick confrontation with Shane in the hall. She NEEDS that little black book.
What. A. Hot. Dad. Callie catches Derek before he leaves with his two wee babes, convincing him to do Mickey’s surgery. Derek agrees to do it that night because he has no time in the morning, and Callie says she’ll take Zola and Bailey back to daycare.
“Are you pregnant? Does Alex know?” Meredith causes a little panic to go through Jo, is still looking for Stephanie, and still can’t get over that fact that she HAS A MUG LIKE THAT. Whiiiicchhhh causes, her to find her mom’s journal that is stuck to the mug.
A little angry that Shane is late, Derek thinks that the reason he is hesitant is because of the Heather ordeal. As Shane tells Derek he doesn’t want to work with him (Bromance breaking up??), Derek just lets him leave. Oh. Snap.
And Derek is in surgery with Mickey, which ends up going south.
As Callie aimlessly wonders the hall, Meredith passes by, with mug and journal in hand. She informs her that she is continuing her mom’s research, but not for the initial reason.
“I am not riding her coattails, I am sharing her passion.”
Callie and Derek are taking Mickey’s brain out (gross!), where Callie informs him that she is not dropping the project. She tells him she really needs his help, Derek just gives her a smile.
As a dejected Cristina comes in, sits down, gives a sigh ,starts talking about her day, Owen and Emma, Meredith just glances up.
“Also, the automatic paper towel thingy won’t recognize me as human. I’m just standing there waving my hands like an idiot.”
Cristina just goes on and on, not realizing that Mer isn’t paying attention. Cristina asks her what she’s doing and Mer tells her she is going to 3D print portal veins. As Cristina wonders how she’s going to pull it off, Mer gets her moment. Meredith informs Cristina that she has a career and a family and she’s going to do both. Mer basically tells Cristina that she doesn’t have time for her saying she can’t. Mer then continues by saying that she was always there for Cristina, for whenever and now Mer needs her and Cristina is suppose to help her.
“And instead last week you pushed me aside, because I had a baby. You don’t have time for me now, because you don’t have time for people who want things that you don’t want.”
Cristina just gets up and leaves, giving Mer her space. Realizing that she actually caused damage between.
Annnnddd we are back at the house where the episode started. With Derek hanging up Zola’s artwork. I LOVE HOW THIS EPISODE OPERATED.
Anyways, Mer comes home, red mug in tow and we basically have the cutest MerDer scene ever. They discussed their schedules, and how they aren’t working. Then BAM, Derek makes it all happen. He explains that he is going to make it work and let Meredith have her big year. He’s had his year, so he will step back and do fewer surgeries to focus on the research and spend time with the kids. Meredith against brings up the “don’t-wanna-be-like-my-mother” issue.
“You’re not your mother. You know that.”
Plus, spending time with the kids isn’t a consolation prize, but it is the prize. He jokes about letting Meredith have a year with them down the road with them.
They share a sweet smile and I just can’t handle the cuteness.
“I love you.”
“You should. What I’m doing is amazing for you.”
I ABSOLUTELY loved this episode. The direction, the connection, and just the way each scene feed into the next. But also Derek in it. He hasn’t been scene heavy in many of the other episodes, so it was nice to see this one, especially with him doing the voiceover. Mer took a little back seat, but her all about her research in this one was a nice sight to see. She was dedicated, focused and figured out what she wanted to do. Derek started his brain-mapping project, but also made it possible for Meredith to have her year. Which I am soooo excited for. This episode really set it up well for MerDer and how they handle work and kids. I feel like it will be full steam ahead.
I realize that the conflict between Meredith and Cristina cut deeper than I initially anticipated, but I’m going to chalk that up to the ladies growing up, therefore handling things differently. If this indeed quite different, it will be interesting to see where it heads.
Next week is the Halloween episode, its gonna be good.
If you have a different opinion on the episode or would like me to explain my opinion more, leave a comment below or tweet me @seen_in_grey by clicking on my name. I’m always excited to hear what others think. Full steam ahead!!
Thanks for reading and I’ll see y’all next week!
