6.05 & 6.06: Tears and Intensity

By AmandaLand | October 26, 2009 |

So I know I didn’t do a review last week and this week I am going to do a double review on Owen and Cristina. I felt like 6.05: Invasion just did not have enough Owina stuff. I actually did not like the episode at all at first but after watching it a couple more times, it grew on me. I decided that although I may not have liked that there was not much Owina scenes that I should focus on the other great parts of the episode. It was very emotional and it featured the awesome-ness of Arizona and Callie. Izzie got fired which sucked but I know she will be back. I was waiting to see if there would be more Owen and Cristina things to talk about in 6.06: I Saw What I Saw but there was not much yet again. I don’t care that much because it was an awesome and intense episode. I was literally on the edge of my seat watching it. Alright so now that I told you why exactly I didn’t do my review last week lets get started on 6.05.

recap1

This was the week where the Mercy Westers officially came to our hospital. They came and they conquered. They severely kicked our peoples asses! I am not saying I like them but I don’t think we can deny that. Well lets talk about Cristina this episode, she has totally given up. You can see it in the first scene when Meredith gave her awesome speech to get everybody motivated. It did not really work for Cristina because as everyone ran out to go get their surgeries, Cristina just sat there. Don’t you all remember when Cristina literally bumped Izzie down to the ground as they were running during their awesome competition in season four? Where is that girl? The girl that will do anything for a surgery, just that little scene on this episode showed the first glimpse of Cristina’s fire burning out. It makes me very sad to think about it too.

review2

The first scene with Owen and Cristina was not a big one, Cristina asked where he wanted her and he told her anywhere. Then one of the newbies comes up with what I thought was a pretty good idea about doing Zones but Cristina of course thought it was dumb. Owen liked Jackson’s idea which I believe makes total sense. I have read that people thought Owen should not have done that or that he should have agreed with Cristina. The thing people must know about Owen is that he is intense and does his job at work. He was obviously stressed about all of the patients being flooded in and really did not think about the fact that his girlfriend may get angry. It really was not that big of a deal. So Cristina got stuck with Jackson who has such nice eyes! She kicks his ass by saving that guy in 2.2 seconds and is all like “That’s how we do it on our side of town.” Take that new hot guy named Jackson! Bam! I just thought it was so hardcore and Cristina-like for her to say that, it was totally awesome!

review3

Owen had a few cases and I was a little angry at the fact that he seemed to favor the Mercy Westers. He told Alex that he could not scrub in for the old guys surgery and later does the same to Cristina. I know now that I really can not be too angry at him, to him it was fair. I am just so overprotective of our people that I get angry whenever they don’t get a surgery or get in trouble. Owen was only doing what was fair and doing his job, he can not baby these people. They are doctors and if they have to do more work then usual then so be it. I think the Mercy Westers came in this episode with a lot more determination, I mean they are the new people at the hospital so they wanted to show what they were made of. Our people seemed to not go as hardcore and that is especially true for Cristina.

review4

So now to talk about the second scene with Owen and Cristina. This one they actually interact and talk privately, sort of. Yay! Well Jackson realized something medically wrong with the guy and Cristina was not there to notice it so when she got back, Owen picked Jackson to scrub in. Cristina is obviously mad and Owen goes “He was here and you weren’t”  This is when I knew it was going to get ugly, Cristina ain’t going to go down without a fight. She is obviously pissed and yells his name which actually made my hair stand up. It was so intense and awesome. Owen obviously comes back but what I noticed is that he does not yell back but is calm with her. You can see the love between them just in this small exchange. It seems to be a bad scene with the two of them and it looks like they really do not like one another when you first see it but just for him to walk back to her shows his love for her. Looking closer you see how he says “What? Cristina what?” with such sincerity and he looks down at her with love and not annoyance. Just the fact that he says her first name and not Dr. Yang shows how he does care. I am sure he wants to explain himself more but all he can get out is “This is one surgery”, I mean he does have an emergency surgery to get to. I really wish later in the episode that he would find her and talk to her but that did not happen which kind of made me a little upset. I just wish he would start to realize that she needs him now just like when he needed her. After this line I was totally expecting Cristina to fight with him, I mean she did a little earlier when she mentioned his whole rule about favoring but that was about it. All she said was “forget it” and walked away. I was shocked and I saw her drive was diminishing. I know Owen totally wanted to help her and you can tell by the total concern on his face but like I said, he had a surgery to get to.

review5

Now comes the scene that I never thought would ever happen, Cristina broke down and cried. No she did not just cry, she balled her eyes out! She got out every feeling that she has been having lately. This was such a sad and touching scene, Sandra Oh totally rocked it out! Cristina just wants to hold a heart again and feel the joy of surgery. I mean it must be totally exhausting fighting constantly for surgeries and now for their jobs. I just want Cristina to get what she deserves and that is a Cardio Attending that can teach her and can give her back the joy that she used to feel. I actually think that when Owen mentioned how it is only one surgery, that was the thing that allowed Cristina to realize that he is somewhat right. She says “I’m like chasing after surgeries I don’t care about” I mean it was surgery on a persons leg, of course she didn’t care. It was not something she wanted to do but felt the need to fight for it, it was her wake up call and it made all of her feelings come out. I loved how Meredith comforted her, their friendship is just completely amazing to me. I just wish it was Owen who was there to help her but I will just pretend in my head. It was an awesome part of the episode regardless. Overall I enjoyed this episode and realized there there is still so much love between Owina in just these little scenes they have together, you just have to read between the lines a bit. So now lets move on to 6.06.

review6

This episode was intense and it was sort of like a murder mystery. I totally knew it would not be any of our people and it would be a Mercy Wester. There were some moments where I was nervous for Cristina like when she got the chart first and she gave the meds but I knew she was not to blame. I actually loved when Cristina walked up to Owen and he said to her “take your pick”. It shows how he trusts her and he does not need to hold her hand. It was a very hectic situation and I knew there would not be many scenes with them together so I had to search and find moments like these. To other people, it is just him telling her to go do her job but to me it is him putting trust into her and seeing her as the great doctor she is.

review7

I loved the look Owen gave Cristina when she did her hardcore punch to the chest karate chop move on the firefighter. When he is like “Or that works too”, it was awesome! He saw how badass she is especially with hearts and looked so proud to be her boyfriend. I just know they will always get through things together because of those looks and that chemistry between them. They are both hardcore and nothing can come between them. I forgot to mention that earlier when they were going to go to the OR he said “Yang, your with me” I know it is about the surgery but I still loved hearing him say it and I like to see them working side by side in these past couple of episodes. There may not be much personal interaction but just them being in the same room makes me happy, I know it is pathetic but it is all I have for right now!

review 8

I like that Owen knew Cristina was not responsible for the patients death, you could see that when she says “I am not going down for this” and he said “Someone is” and looked back at everybody else. He looked at the others because he knew it was not Cristina’s fault. When he does tell the Chief that Cristina got the chart first, you can totally see the hesitation. He cares about her so much and does not want to place any blame on her. People seemed to have thought that was an ass move on his part but he could not lie and it is not like he wanted to tell, he had to. Owen is a caring guy and although it seems like he has not noticed Cristina lately and has not been there for her, it is only because we have only seen them together in the hospital during hectic situations. It is very hard for him to notice these things when he is at work and I really can not wait to see some interactions between them outside of work.

review9

So obviously we all know April gets fired and it was actually quite sad. I mean I do not care about her or anything but it did suck to see her and Izzie get fired for one mistake. That is what happens with a hospital merger like this, one tiny mistake like not looking in somebody’s throat can cost you your job. Now everybody must be even more scared and I really liked the last scene where all of our people and the Mercy Westers were standing together. They had a hard day and were actually talking to each other without any anger or competition between them. I loved when Cristina said that it could of been any one of them because it is completely true. Look how much Cristina has grown, the old Cristina would not have stood up for an enemy like that. I like to see this part of her come out and I really can’t wait for her to open up more to Owen. I know they will get many more scenes together so after six episodes I am not too worried.

Sorry this was long and that I may have contradicted myself a few times. I do get mad at Cristina or Owen at times but they will always be my favorite couple. They make my heart skip a beat when they come on screen together and even when they are not getting along, its those little things that makes me know that it will all be okay. We are not too far into the season at all so I have faith and I am hoping to have a lot more awesome Owina scenes to talk to you about in the future. I can not wait for next week because although it is all about Derek who I love by the way, I am pretty sure I saw Owen’s red hair beside Cristina in the promo. Yeah I notice those things because I am weird and totally obsessed but I am proud to say it! I am proud to be a Grey’s Anatomy junkie! Well on that note I am excited for next week and please comment below on my review and Owina! Thank you so much for reading!

Thank you to Grey’s Anatomy Online for the pictures!

I enjoyed reading this review – it was nice to re-live the episodes from the perspective of the relationship between Cristina and Owen. It has been frustrating that they have had so little screen time together in the last few episodes, but I agree with you that the connection between them is still there. Thank you for this – I’m looking forward to your reviews of future episodes that contain (we hope) lots more C/O scenes!

    AmandaLand reply on October 26th, 2009 22:32:

Thank you! I know I have been very frustrated too but I am sure we will get some awesome Owina scenes soon! I hope to have a lot more to write about in the future.

    Thanks for reading,

great read! i too love owen and cristina and by far are my favorite couple-i miss them. i am worried about “teddy” but and trying to trust their love for one another. i guess i thought after last season they had enough to get through this season with owen continuing to heal his PTSD and crsitinas demons as well. thanks again and lets hope we get more love from OWINA!! ;-)

    AmandaLand reply on October 27th, 2009 00:48:

Your welcome and thanks for reading! Yeah I am a little nervous about Teddy too but I am sure she won’t break them up or anything, they are way too in love for that to happen. Keep the faith

Great review Amanda! Obviously there wasn’t a whole lot to talk about between Owina but you did a great job talking about the few scenes they had together. The fact that you look for the little things they say to each other and show how it shows they love each other makes me feel so much better about them kinda-sorta fighting lol
Very funny review, I enjoyed every second and I can’t wait for this week’s episode/review
PS I love how you noticed Owen’s red hair lol

    AmandaLand reply on October 27th, 2009 00:51:

Yeah I would notice the red hair… Thank you for reading and commenting every week! Hopefully I will have a ton more Owina stuff to talk about this week or I will have to just look for the little moments again which takes some extra work but I believe in myself

    Lindsay reply on October 27th, 2009 00:53:

I believe in you too lol good luck and hopefully there is more to work with this week!

do you think that the lack of Owina is because shonda plans much more with the arrival with “teddy”?

    AmandaLand reply on October 27th, 2009 01:39:

I totally think that is the reason. When she comes, there will be a lot more of them which makes me excited. I am a little nervous for her to come around but at least they will have scenes together  I am hoping to see some emotional and awesome scenes between these two soon

    Thanks for reading,

Excellent review! I tottaly break with the Cristina/Mer scene. It was so powerful, I could feel everything she was feeling, one of my Sandra Oh’s favourite scenes. And I care about Owina so much that I get so pissed when Owen seems so insensitive to Cristina. She is the one who helped him, she is the reason that he is still alive, I mean. Oh and when she yelled Dr. Hunt! That gave me chills! I LOVE LOVE LOVE their relationship. Amazing chemistry, amazing performances, amazing actors.

    Congrats again.

    AmandaLand reply on October 27th, 2009 03:09:

Thank you so much! I was nervous about this review. Omg I know the Cris/Mer scene was totally awesome! I am glad I am not the only one who was so affected when Cristina yelled “Dr Hunt!” It was just so powerful! I agree with all your statements at the end

Thank you so much for reading,

    Amandaland!

Great job! I’m definitely looking forward to seeing future episodes, which seem to be more Cristina/Owen-centric. And for getting your thoughts on them! I have to say, you write nearly as much as I do when I talk about Cristina/Owen scenes (over at the Yang-Hunt Thread). :) Bravo! Can’t wait for more.

    AmandaLand reply on October 27th, 2009 07:40:

Thank you! I love that thread! I read it all the time but I never write anything. I will have to look for you on there!
