6.07: Backing the Badass!
By Aussie Lee | November 4, 2009 | ![]()
You know…I had to wait for what seemed like FOREVER to see this episode. Well you know.. it was forever! It was midnight Monday night before I saw it! It’s a wonder I wasn’t on valium by then or if I had half a brain, asleep, because seriously… the wait was almost too long! But boy.. it was worth the wait. I loved the epi on a whole but come on folks.. you all know what had me giddy dontchya!?? What??? Nooooo?? Well come with me then and let me tell ya why k?….
It all starts with an x-ray of a spine which houses a horrible, horrible tumour. Oh wait.. let me rephrase that… an ‘awesome’ tumour as Cristina excitedly announces to Callie. Ahhh.. Cristina using the word ‘awesome’? The poor thing really does need a surgery huh. So Callie is quick to correct her..“Awesome in a bad way. It’s eaten five levels of his spine!” Now that sounds more on the horrible side. Poor Isaac. But as Callie tries to catch up to the rest of the conversation she’s quick to ask the big question of the man of the episode, Derek Shepherd. “Wait. You’re not seriously considering trying to take it out?” Cue Cristina’s dance of joy.. “Of course he is! He’s Shepherd!!” followed by a what I would call a congratulatory pat on the shoulder, like she knows what the man is thinking! Gotta love her tact!

Then cue Arizona, walking into the room, mumbling something about bad telephone cases or something not believing the worst news of a tumour for Isaac, the man who last week picked up a lesion she’d missed therefore saving her cute ass. Then cue Mark’s wit.. “That says more about you than it does him..” and without the slightest hesitation, Arizona directs a sarcastic styled giggle at Mark before saying “I’m sorry.. do you even know who Isaac is?”… Mark: “No idea..” Woot!! Arizona 1 : Mark 0. So as the latest scan on Isaac’s tumour rolls down the computer screen in front of the new Attendings Club + 2, Callie’s face says it all as she and the rest around her sees that the tumour is a lot worse than they first thought.
Nothing that would stop Derek going in and trying to get it out though.. not even a loud verbal “NO!” from The Chief. So instead, he’s doing the sneaky and going through with the surgery. That’s right.. he’s going ROGUE!!! Cue Madonna’s Vogue music..”Come on Vogue.. Let your body go with the flow, you know, you can do it…” Oh dang.. wrong word.. gotta say though, right idea huh. Those lyrics actually fit!! And so did the next scene with Callie & Arizona bounding down the hospital stairs in their hot dark blue matching scrubs and surrounding the man himself.. McRogue!

Callie: Are you going rogue??!! *with that cheeky, mischevious Callie grin we all love*
Derek: I’m doing a surgery I believe in.
Arizona: Against the Chief’s orders… he’ll freak when he finds out.
Derek: There is a computer schedule saying that I’m doing craniotomies all day, so he is not going to find out.
This sends Arizona into a shooshing frenzy because we all know what she’s like when it comes to authority figures and says… “No. Shh. Don’t say anymore. Cause me? The chief? Secrets? Bad idea.” Hahaha.. I’m loving the wit emerging from Arizona. I’m finding myself enjoying this character more and more every episode. She’s new and fresh and funny yet deep and meaningful and wise. Yet not too good in situations with authority figures, so Callie knows when to fold them or when to hold them and Callie senses, it’s time to fold and run but not without giving Derek another Torres Pep Talk. “Hey.. I think it’s badass… Come on lets go“ and drags Arizona away before her girlfriend overloads on the shooshing.
So we next see Callie, wearing an undeniably groovy scrub cap, standing with Arizona and Mark outside the operating room where Derek has been standing for 10 hours mumbling to himself and staring into the gaping hole that he’s created in Isaac’s back. Of course Mark thinks Derek’s lost the plot and practically bails on his friend there and then saying he’s ‘cracked’ and how he knew that would happen. Again it’s Arizona to pull him into line saying… “Don’t be smug. This is one of our people’s lives at stake.” Arizona 2 : Mark 0. You go you good thang!! Callie takes her turn to stare through the OR door muttering how it’s so depressing, seeing him in there that long and still not knowing what to do, when she hears a booming voice from behind her say “What did you just say???!!!!” It’s then that Callie senses a large object in her mouth, her foot, so moves it to the side before saying..

“What? No I didn’t… did I? I didn’t…”
Hmmm.. yeah.. nice save Callie.. smooth.. NOT. Hence the Chief entering the OR room to berate Derek yet again and ordering a stop on the surgery. We all knew this wouldn’t stop McRogue, not a chance, so he’s back in the OR going for broke, cutting the cord as far as The Chief was concerned, which wouldn’t take too long and allow Hunt to follow in the same OR. With Derek’s fellow attendings standing guard at various points on the outer rims in case the wandering Chief arrives, it’s unfortunate that it’s Hunt that the Chief encounters first. And as Hunt explains that it’s Torres who’s now in the OR performing an emergency surgery, who should appear behind the Chief? Yep you got it.. Callie… still with her foot in her mouth that not even a good coffee could wash down!
Callie: “What am I doing? What? I just heard my name.” *Damn that being in the wrong place at the wrong time thingo*
Ding Ding Ding! The “I smell an unauthorized surgery” beeper goes off for the Chief and he strides off to derogue the McRogue yet again. But wait… are there more obstacles in his way??
Callie: “Bailey will stop him.. she’s at the door!”
Owen: “She’s in the OR with Shepherd!”
Callie: “Then who’s at the door?”
Cue a running Arizona………
Callie: “Ohhhh my God..”
Ahhh yahhh… that’s right Callie… I was thinking the same thing because we sure as heck know how Arizona reacts when there is authority and the Chief involved. I put my hands over my eyes at that point, not wanting to watch, strange though how my fingers had a mind of their own and were parted perfectly for me to still see!

Arizona: “I said NO! Dr Shepherd is operating on the inside of a man’s spinal cord right now. Even the most minor disturbance could cause him to make a mistake on that patient, a patient who happens to work here and who’s life I would personally like to see Dr Shepherd save so no, you don’t get to go in there and be a bully. Not today Chief. Not on my watch.”
WOAHHHH!!!! As Callie & Owen watch on in understandable awe and the Chief stares a little more at the watchwoman before him before turning and leaving the guarded gate, I suggest we all stand up and applaud folks! Another speech to knock your socks off… granted not as deep and meaningful as her chat with Mr Torres but just as important and powerful! Damn she is good! And so did Callie as she rushes forward to plant a congratulatory kiss… oh hold on.. sorry.. mind wandering… umm… oh yeah, as she rushes forward to say..“Ok.. I totally thought that was going to end different!” with the sweetest of looks on her face.. full of admiration for her girl. Yet for Arizona it was that look that melted away the watchwoman exterior to reveal the standard result.. crying… but this time on the comfort of Callie’s shoulder. No surprise for Callie as she embraces her brave girl and says “Yeah.. more like that.” Awe.. seriously.. they are sweet. Am loving all this screen time with them interacting on all levels. Goosebumpworthy.
It’s Callie’s turn next in the OR to be supportive wingwoman but we could probably leave the supportive part out this time, as she still seems to have a foot in the mouth problem. Seriously.. she hasn’t got a cream for that yet? Sheesh! So as Derek explains he’s unsure which vessel to cut and will have to go in blind, Callie likens it to that of a trip wire.
Derek: If I cut the wrong one, the entire cord strikes out. Ok. We’ll come back to this later.
Callie: Later? So you could finish the entire surgery only to cut the wrong one? This will all have been for nothing?
Derek: Exactly. Thanks for pointing that out.

Torres Pep Talk… not so much. Cream, injection, antibiotics, whatever Callie… STAT! Ahhh gotta love the gal though right? Tells it how it is and keeping it real. So with all their guarding duties completed for the time being, Team McRogue are watching from the gallery, literally on the edge of their seats… yet some closer than others!! Awww… so what do we have here? Physical contact?!! YAY! Progress people progress!! This was sweet to see….actually seeing them supporting each other like a real couple. I loved it! And as Arizona freaks out, Callie places a supportive hand on Arizona’s back and stares in nervous angst at the monitor as Derek chooses the red or the blue wire… and as he makes his choice Callie stands and shouts… “He cut… he made the cut!!” I tell you as she stood, I sat and closed my eyes. I had visions of celebrations, balloons falling from the roof, streamers, party hats and kisses of congratulations all round, particularly between a certain two! Unfortunately, when I opened my eyes, none of that was happening but I still had a smile on my face!
Callie rocked yet again and so did Arizona! They continually keep upping the anti in their relationship and what Shonda is providing us on screen in their interactions. And we all know that the level will be rising again come this Thursday night. If the promos and sneaks and episode stills aren’t enough to get you almost building your own time machine to move into the future, than you need to leave the building. Is it freakin’ Thursday yet?????!!!!!!!!!!
Till next time,
Aussie Lee xxoo

Great review!! Loved it!
Callie and Arizona are my favorite characters (Cristina pulling in really close) and I love reading reviews about them. I was wondering if we were going to get an Aussie Lee review this week, and it was certainly worth the wait! You pretty much said everything I was thinking, so I really have nothing else to say.
Is it Thursday yet? Is it Thursday yet??
@calzona24, I was worried whether we were going to get an Aussie Lee review too!! LOL.
I’m glad I could be your voice!
Thanks for your comment!

“Ahhh yahhh… that’s right Callie… I was thinking the same thing” We all think the same… That can’t be good, but as usual AZ surprising us every minute.
Progress!!!… It’s a damn time! *waves*
Waiting for your review.. always!
@Bast, Welcome back Bast!! Great to ’see’ you again!
Thanks for your comment! This week’s episode should provide some good writing material and possibly create a rather long winded review!! Hopefully I won’t make you wait too long!
Take care.
