Spoiler: Committed to Calzona?

By Metriosity | November 5, 2009 |

Matt over at Fancast has posted another great article regarding my favorite couple on Greys. It is a little spoilerish so I will put it beneath a cut.

callie-arizona

This week on ABC’s ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ (Thursdays at 9/8c), Jessica Capshaw steps to the fore when Dr. Arizona Robbins takes on a 10-year-old patient whose dad is poised to make a hefty donation to Seattle Grace.

As if tending to a big-bucks benefactor’s son isn’t daunting enough, Arizona must make a critical decision when the boy’s condition takes an unexpected turn. What’s more, emotions also run high for Arizona on the personal front, as she and Callie (played by Sara Ramirez) weather a rift in their romance.

Is the root-for coupling referred to by some fans as “Calzona” at risk? Or is this week’s squabble but a bump in their road to long-term happiness?

Probably the latter. “One of the things we committed to the season is really playing out Callie and Arizona in a relationship,” ‘Grey’s Anatomy‘ creator Shonda Rhimes tells Fancast.com. “I don’t want to break them up easily. I want to watch what happens when these two women have a relationship, and to see what that means.”

Capshaw joined ‘Grey’s’ last winter, and was deservedly promoted to series regular status this season. As Arizona, she helped the then-curious Callie recover from her unexpected, oftentimes awkward and suddenly snipped same-sex romance with Dr. Erica Hahn. Dr. Robbins, bless her heart, also tends to lighten up the halls of Seattle Grace with her sunny disposition, or make us want to stand up and clap when she delivers a rousing speech about being “a good man in a storm.”

“Jessica is amazing,” Rhimes raves. “She and Sara have really committed [to this story], and they have amazing chemistry together. It’s been great to watch that develop.”

Rhimes even goes so far as to liken “Calzona” to ‘Grey’s Anatomy’s’ hallmark hook-up.

“For me,” she says, “it is very ‘Mer-Der-like’ to watch them together.”

So Gabblers, what do you hope for in the end for Calzona? Do you want a happily ever after, or are you hoping for a Happily Never after?

Take it easy! ;-)

Thanks for liking this story! I was RAVING to Shonda about what a bright light Arizona was, what a great character she is. Shonda of course shared the opinion! What’s not to like?

Well, firstly, you always have great articles!
Secondly, if you happen to speak to Shonda in the future, please let her know she will be responsible for me crying like a baby, should anything bad happen with Calzona. I am expecting weddings and babies. Thank you xD

I am glad that Shonda is rooting for Arizona and Callie. It is about time that Callie got a good relationship. Someone who values her and takes care of her. Even if it wasn’t Arizona (Who I love by the way) it would suck for Callie to be screwed over again. Happy ending!!

@Metriosity, Very cool that Matt found your take on it!

    @Matt Webb Mitovich, Editor-at-Large FANCAST.com,

Hi Matt, I run the largest cal/az fanbase out there, so of course we’re rooting for both callie and arizona to make it work in the long run.

We’re not deluded though – all GA couples must have their ups and downs.

Thanks so much for your commitment to scooping on GA. You’re our community’s favorite gossip-pusher cause you don’t just scoop the straight couples/characters!

    Happily ever after, for sure!

I’m SO happy to hear Shonda saying how much she wants to tell their story as a couple. Yay! :)

Callie and Arizona are super cute together, and both characters are so powerful and have so amazing backgrounds and life stories! And that is, of course, because of the awesome acting of Jessica Capshaw and Sara Ramirez! They’re pretty amazing!

Just something I didn’t enjoy reading: “I don’t want to break them up easily.”

Well then don’t break them up. Like…never, please! :D

Cute couple, but not Mer/Der. Sorry, but they’re just not.

You know.. shoot me down in flames, whatever. But I have to say it. I totally agree with Shonda here. MerDer like indeed.

Yes I probably sound like a hypocrite, as Callica was without a doubt, the most amazing relationship I’d ever seen on screen between two women but damn it, Callie & Arizona, as the characters and Sara & Jessica as the actresses behind them, they just well… gel. It’s that simple….

And what two relationships ever go down the same path? None. So what if there wasn’t the friendship to start with? So what if the chemistry wasn’t there to begin with? The path Calzone leads is just different.. with, in my very small opinion, a very MerDer like feel about it. Ask me what makes me have that opinion and I can honestly say I really can’t put my finger on any particular part…. it’s just how it feels, to me.

They are on a journey in their relationship and I, as a avid viewer and fan, am on it with them. They are simply gelling as a couple….

And as someone just pointed out to me and what I’ve said all along.. as long as Callie is happy… then label me happy too!

Sorry.. rant over… .. just one more thing…

Shonda… show us the Calzone love!! We know you wanna!! ;)

    Metriosity reply on November 5th, 2009 09:27:

@Aussie Lee, Meredith and Derek started out as a one night stand. Callie and Arizona started as a kiss in a bathroom. Callie tried to avoid Arizona like Meredith tried to avoid Derek. Callie has all sorts of relationship issues, just as Meredith did. And like Derek, Arizona is patiently letting her work through them while being supportive.

That is why it feels like MerDer to me. There are the similarities. While still having enough differences to make it surprising.

Aussie Lee reply on November 5th, 2009 09:32:

    @Metriosity, W.O.R.D. That’s all.

    It was a great article!
I also see that in terms of chemistry, Arizona and Callie rival Meredith and Derek. Both couples have this special touch of sexy sweetness (though Mer/Der have more of the sexy – work on it writers! we want more sexy Cal/Ari!).
I really hope that Callie and Arizona end up like Meredith and Derek, I just hope that they don’t take the same dramatic and twisted path to get there!

“I don’t want to break them up easily.” Yeah, not a fan of that line either. I could have done without the last word on that sentence. It’s like saying she wants to string them along to make the break up hard… I don’t know, but I don’t like it. From what I can tell though, Shonda isn’t looking to break them up, and that sounds good to me!

Show us the Calzone love, Shonda! (echoing Aussie Lee)
