6:08 Love. Just Love.
By Metriosity | November 9, 2009 | ![]()
So I guess it would be totally unprofessional for me to just write “Squeeeeeeee” for the entire 2000 or so words of this review? Yeah, thought so.
I won’t lie, I have been looking forward to this episode since Jessica Capshaw was added to the cast. I was a fan from the moment she Heelied away leaving Bailey looking stunned back in season 5. And Invest in love was meant to be my dream come true. An episode where Dr Arizona Robbins got a storyline all of her own and was center stage. My dreams didn’t do it justice. It seems that not only I was bowled away but in fact Arizona Robbins swept a lot of people off their feet on Thursday night. I like reading blogs, mainly the comments sections. I lost count of the number of “Arizona Rocks!!!” comments that I saw. They all can’t be from members of the Callie/Arizona Live Journal. There aren’t that many of us, even though we are a hefty number.
I will admit I was a little disappointed that Arizona didn’t get the voice over for this episode. Or even a snippet of one. But that was soon shoved under the carpet when Arizona drags herself out of bed to beg that it’s not her pager going off. I loved this scene, simply as it all flowed so naturally, well possibly with the exception of Callie falling out of the bed. Falling, or was she pushed. CSI! Call them in. Not that this wasn’t natural, as I push my partner out of the bed all the time. Its the only way to get them up. But the thud indicated Callie was doing anything but flowing from under the sheets. Arizona smuggly crawls back into bed but Callie pops a pager into her hands and so ends Arizona’s dreams of some peaceful z time. Shonda and Team Greys have slowly introduced the whole couple-dom aspect of Arizona’s relationship with Callie. There have been some glaring ommissions such as when did Arizona get a key to the apartment? Yes, I am still sore over that one. But to open an episode with them acting like a couple was wonderful. Made all the more poignant as it followed on from Meredith and Derek snuggled up in bed. Yay for the saphic version of MerDer (Don’t shoot me MerDer fans, it is a compliment I promise.)
Arizona gets to the hospital and is sent to find Karev in the ER where a pregnant mother has been involved in a car accident. The baby is showing signs of distress as is the mother and they only way they have a chance to save them both is by playing Wacky Races in the hall with Callie and her Mushroom powered flying machine. One ER, two life or death cases, only one can be victorious. Start your bedpans! With engines at maximum, Arizona kicks her heelies into high gear and leaves Callie in the dust… Or rather stuck behind a door and a nurse.

The baby is delievered while Derek deals with the brain issues of the mom. Arizona and Alex take care of the baby in the NICU. These two work great together. Which I have said from the beginning. Alex needs a mentor he doesn’t want to sleep with or punch. Alex is left with the baby while Arizona goes off to do rounds. Chugging down one cup of coffee, followed quickly by one that her girlfriend brings to her. Yes, her GIRLFRIEND. I did wonder if the whole “Callie: I brought you coffee. Oh but you already have one. Arizona: No, I want your coffee, I need your coffee.” Was code for something else. Something that will probably only ever be seen in works of fan fiction… But alas, it was just to be coffee. McCeltic comes by to ruin their coffee code moment to let them know that Cristina may be on the warpath as no one woke her up for a surgery. In my opinion that is a doomed situation either way. Wake Cristina up, lose a hand. Dont wake her up… Lose a hand.

Arizona is stood by the doors to wonderland after downing two coffee’s. I would be bouncing off of the walls. Anyway, with a small contingent of doctors looking perky and ready to go. And Cristina. Arizona delivers the perkiest speech to date. One which made me wish I was a kid and in that ward. Candy clouds and chocolate rivers… Wait that is Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. Well I guess its similar. Reed does bare a striking resemlance to an Oompa Loompa…

Ok I know this is the first time on a Peds rotation with me for some of you. Not for others. But I want you to understand I run my Peds unit a little differently than you may be used to. This is not general surgery in miniature. These are the tiny humans. These are chidren. They believe in magic they play pretend. There is fairy dust in their IV bags. They hope and they cross their fingers and they make wishes and that makes them more resilient than adults. They recover faster, survive worse. They believe. In peds we have miracles and magic. In Peds, anything is possible.
Next we meet the child that will haunt my dreams for a fair while. Wallace. The miniature version of Burke strolls around the Peds ward doing rounds. Cristina moves Dr Boy out of the way to give her presentation. Then it is his turn to present on himself. Arizona lets Mr Potato Head give a little more information before his Mom and Dad let use glimpse the happy family. Wallace lets slip that its Arizona’s birthday on Friday the same as him. Did anyone else feel their heart sink at this point? Nothing good ever comes from high expectations and birthdays.
Arizona is called into a meeting with Wallace’s parents and the Chief. Also present is the most odious man at Seattle Grace. No, not the Chief, I already mentioned him. I mean Mr Jennings. Wallace’s mom and dad tell them all that they want to give Seattle Grace (The remainder of the name shall not be spoken here) a donation of $25 million. Half is to go towards research to cure the Short Bowel disease that Wallace suffers from, the other half is to go to the Peds unit. Jennings looked happier than when he had his nut fish removed.
Over breakfast Callie and Arizona chat to Mark, Lexie, Owen and Cristina about the mega bucks heading Arizona’s way. It will most likely buy more unicorns and rainbows to make Peds a happier place than Disneyland. This was one of my favorite scenes of the night… Along with every other scene with Arizona in it. Though this one was special in a way. Up until this point, Callie and Arizona have been shown as a separate entity from the rest of the social cliques of the hospital. They missed out on the baseball game and other such non medical events. But here they are hanging out, making breakfast for everyone. I have heard it criticised as too much like an episode of Friends. But so what? That show lasted forever because people like to see people doing regular stuff. None of us, well maybe some, can save lives on a daily basis. But we can all hang out with our buddies over breakfast. And now, because Shonda made it so, even the lesbians can hang out too. Who wants to come over to mine for bacon and waffles? Its allowed now! After a little kiss, shown from a distance but one none the less, Arizona heads off to work. Leaving Callie stunned that Lexie knew about her birthday before her girlfriend did. Thats not totally shocking if you think about it. If Arizona isn’t a fan of birthdays, its unlikely she would have mentioned it. Callie would have probably raised the question after a few years without cakes or presents, but its nothing unusual for partners to not know these things. Honestly, how many of you have forgotten a birthday, even if you do know about it?
Back at the hospital the little baby isn’t doing too well. Arizona leaves her in Alex’s hands while she goes to check on Wallace who had a bad night. My heart started to digest at this point as it had sunk so low into my stomach. Wallace’s mom made the bad dreams go away so that he could rest before going to help Arizona on the evening rounds. Meanwhile the baby is getting worse. Arizona is midway through some medical proceedure when Alex arrives to help out. I know the baby is made of latex and wiring but Jessica Capshaw managed to pull of a look that had me genuinely believing that they had miraculously hired a premie baby. Sick kids are never a good thing for the heartstrings. But somehow I felt comforted that Arizona was there. She cares, about all of them. Makes me feel a warm glow from somewhere deep inside that I only usually feel when I see arrogant people fall off of their bikes, or land on their butts when roller blading.
Lurch comes to show Arizona films of Wallace’s bowels. Unlike most kids where you would find pennies, toy soldiers and your house keys, Arizona spots that Wallace’s films show that his obstruction is biological and not good in any way. His parents don’t take the news well. I can’t blame them. Even if it was Arizona, whose eyes were incredibly blue in that scene… Not that I was looking, I would demand that she tried too. But I would also respect her opinion. She is the Doctor after all. She tells the parents to prepare themselves and Wallace as the poor little guys time is almost up. By this point I was bawling along with Bethany, Wallace’s mom. The Chief, ever the capitalist optomist tells Arizona that she can do it. Would she rather that Wallace went elsewhere. He certainly wouldn’t. The money would flitter away too. Arizona reluctantly agree’s. Hands up, who wanted to give the Chief a bunch of fives to the kisser at this point? I certainly did.
Sometime later after Cristina has saved the magical flying mushroom machine, Arizona is stood out front of Seattle Grace. Callie comes out to tell Arizona the drama of the OR. Arizona on the other hand isn’t in the mood. She is scared and feeling a little less than confident. She needs Callie to tell her she is great. Screw that Callie! Give her a hug and tell her she is awesome! Alas, no hugging. One small peck on the lips fills the quota for lesbian physical contact for one episode . A firm grip of the arms, pretty much like a coach to the star quarterback, and a nod later Arizona is off to perform the surgery. She stops in to talk to Wallace before he goes into surgery. For a ten, almost eleven, year old he is very bright but also a killer on tthe heart. He had noticed that some kids die in Peds. He wondered if it was like going to sleep. Meanwhile Arizona is wishing she could crawl under a rock, or beat the Chief with it. During the surgery she is less than confident. Lurch makes her take a moment mid way through as the Chief hovers over the hospital’s cash, I mean Wallace.

Arizona sits in Callie’s apartment. Minus the cigarette she was holding the last time we had this scene. Instead this time it is her turn to rip into Callie. Callie stands in stunned silence for all of a second as Arizona says what we have all been thinking. She had been there for Callie through a lot of things and where was Callie when she needed her… Ok she was in surgery… Which is a pretty good excuse. Arizona was clearly just having a freak out, which was actually great to see. She has a lot of sides to her and you can see how much she cares for the kids. Even if she says she turns her back on the little coffins you get the feeling that she doesn’t. Cristina and Owen bust in before Callie and Arizona can have angry type kissing… Yes, I am bitter about that. Arizona is less than happy that Cristina went rogue on a kid. She was fine for Derek to do it on a Lab guy she was fond of. But then Derek is fully trained and the lab guy knew what he was getting himself into. The mushroom canon ball wasn’t as well informed.
Arizona’s pager goes off. Wallace is in trouble. We lost a pillow at this point. I tossed it across the room screaming “If that kid dies while Izzie, with her terminal cancer and Moby Dick tumor survive while this poor little kid dies… I will…” I stopped saying anything at this point as Arizona laid into the chief.
Chief: Maybe I can help?
Arizona: No! No you cant. Because as long as you are standing there breathing over my shoulder I feel like I am operating on a stack of dollar bills. Twenty five million dollar bills and what I need to be invested in is this kid. Now please, get the hell out of my OR!
Wallace Anderson didn’t make it. My eyes were stinging as Arizona tells Lurch that she won’t be telling Wallace’s mom and dad that he died. The Chief and Money grabber will do that. She goes on to say that she killed Wallace and freely admits that. Which makes her a liability. Jennings shows no compasion and says that she is on the same page as him. Bring back the nut fish, see how much compasion for his doctors he has then. The Chief shows the first signs of being human at this point. Arizona has now made two speeches telling figures of authority that they suck. And there have been no waterworks. But the looks of just being lost and broken are just as heart wrenching.

*Check out those clenched fists!!!*
As the Andersons are told that Wallace passed away Arizona watches in the distance. Talk about looking haunted. Jessica Capshaw shredded my heartstrings with that one.
She heads home only to be confronted by an apartment full of cheering people in hats and hopping around. No, it wasn’t the Village People. The surprise party releases the waterworks she has held back all day. Finally I hoped that a hug or some such gesture of support would materialize. But no. After some crying and apologizing to Callie, Arizona leaves. No hug. Not even a pat on the back. I can only hope that there is going to be a deleted scene or six in the DVD set which shows Callie hauling tail after her to give her a cuddle in the middle of the street.
*Give her a hug!!!*
Arizona goes back to the hospital to see the Andersons. Jennings is licking their boots like a good little corporate puppy but they aren’t interested. Instead when Arizona arrives they seem relieved to see her. Jennings tries to send her on her way but the Chief does the most decent thing he has done all season, he tells Jennings to leave Arizona alone. Arizona takes the Andersons down to the morgue to say goodbye to their son. Bethany cracks part way into sending away the bad dreams and Arizona takes over. From this point on, I was crying right the way through till the end of the episode. I had to watch it again to make sure I got it all right as I couldnt really see much of the screen through the haze. As Arizona finishes off the dream chant, Wallace’s dad informs Jennings that despite the wonderful ass kissing he had received during their stay, Jennings needn’t have bothered wearing his lips down, as Arizona was the reason that the hospital would still get the money. Anyone else would have flashed Jennings a smug grin. Not Arizona, she was still feeling the pain of the parents and the loss of Wallace.
Coming home she finds Callie asleep on the sofa, in lingerie… How many of you wish you were in her position? Callie wakes up and proclaims that she has hats and presents and donuts. I thought his was really touching as she showed she knew something about how Arizona handles loss. While I was more than happy to just watch Callie fool around with a horn and hat on while in lacy stuff, I was not expecting the perfectly delivered one line. “I love you.” In every TV show someone says it but it has never made me break down into hysterics like I did when Arizona said it. It was delivered so naturally I almost felt like I was intruding into a very personal and private moment. Callie’s face was priceless. Someone finally said it to her. No drama, no fear, it just happened. She had to question it and Arizona confirmed it and I waited for a response. As it faded to black my heart stopped digesting and started making its way into nothingness. Then I heard the whispered response and I was done. A quivering wreck for the rest of the night.. well until I got to watch the episode again on West Coast time.

I have watched a lot of TV in my years on this earth and I can honestly say I have never felt so much emotion from one episode of any show. Jessica Capshaw owned every singly scene that she stepped into. Yes, I am biased as I think she is awesome, but for Invest in Love, I firmly believe she should win an Emmy. The power she threw into her scenes was staggering. All laughing and joking aside everyone put in 110% for that episode. Even Mitch Pileggi, who played Jennings had me completely convinced he was a snivelling worm and I liked him as Skinner on the X Files. But the star of the show was Jessica. The Arizona bandwagon has received a lot of new riders after that episode as she put to rest any doubts that she belongs in that cast.
Did she shine as bright for you guys as she did for me? Are you a new member to the Arizona fanclub? Or do you just want somewhere to write your own review of how she did. Have at it below guys. I love to read your comments! The Gabblers have the best things to say!
Take it easy!

Just. Love. It
Thanks for your wonderful review, Metriosity
Yes, I definitely become Arizona-fans from this point on. She is a really wonderful character, not to mention the great Jessica Capshaw who make the character so alive and so awesome
@nessa, Yay! Another Arizona fan! I am glad you like the review. Even more ecstatic that you like Arizona x)
Jessica Capshaw totally rocks this part. So so so glad she didn’t get the part of Rose when she auditioned. Phew!
@Metriosity, couldn’t agree more ^_^

I have been waiting for this review since Callie said “I love you, too” last Thursday. I knew it was going to be a good one! We seem to be very much in the same ‘Arizona is amazing’ boat. It’s a good boat to be in. This review made my entire week. I laughed so hard that I spit my drink onto my laptop and then freaked because I thought I ruined it. Thank you for that!
I’ve been a fan of Jessica’s long before Grey’s and I am SOOOOO glad that she is finally being recognized for her outstanding abilities as an actress. This episode was beyond amazing. And I agree, the word Emmy needs to be thrown out there. A lot. The episode was damn near perfect, minus the lack of hugging and comfort, but at least we got what we got. I for one was extremely pleased to see them as an actual couple. “One small peck on the lips fills the quota for lesbian physical contact for one episode.” That cracked me up! I was actually thinking the same thing when the episode was over.
There’s really nothing that can describe how I felt about this episode that hasn’t already been said in your review. It was simply, great. I really have nothing else to say.
Long live Callie and Arizona! (okay, so I had one more thing to say…)
@calzona24, I have liked Jessica since I saw her in The Locusts. While it wasn’t a great movie and I was only a teenager at the time, I thought she was excellent. Then in Valentine, again a bad movie but she did a great job with the stuff she was given. I cried my heart out watching her on Into the West and almost died of a heart attack seeing her in the L Word. Then when she appeared on Greys I was so overjoyed I think I may have bust a blood vessel xD So I am right there with you on the fandom.
I even enjoyed her few scenes in Minority Report
I am glad my review said everything you needed it to say. I wanted to write more, but short of writing a novel I didn’t think I would have enough space x)
@Metriosity, The first time I saw her was in Valentine, and yes, it was a really bad movie but I became smitten. Then I saw her in The Practice and re-fell in love, if that’s even a word… But I was so excited I got to see her on a regular basis. Then… Into The West… I’m not sure I have ever cussed and cried so much at the same time in my life at that point. I was crying like a little baby. That was one of the hardest parts to watch for me. And then, The L Word. I freaked my freak when she was on there, even if it was for only 3 episodes. She was so hot when she was on there, not that she’s not hot all the time.
She was in a couple episodes of Bones too, and I was sad we didn’t get to see her that much. But now that she’s on Grey’s… yeah, I think I popped a few blood vessels too!
And I would enjoy a novel on Jessica/Arizona. Go for it!

I was really…surprised. The whole night. I wouldn’t say I was a Jessica Capshaw fan before this episode, I thought she was cute and has done a good job on the show. I was a little weary of how she would do to be honest. But she rocked it so hard in this episode. She owned it. She was amazing.
I couldn’t agree more with “Alex needs a mentor he doesn’t want to sleep with or punch.” I had never thought about that, but it’s true.
Anyway the way the night ended up, that final scene was so beautiful and amazing it made the two little moments where i cringed (outside the hospital when Callie told her she was great, at arms length, or the super cringe worthy bawling Arizona outside the apartment with no hug, no love just “we’re all surgeons they’ll understand”, kinda made me sad for her even more so) have free passes. They’re really babying the audience that may not be okay with a gay storyline, and you know what? I think I’m kinda sorta okay with it now, for the most part…as long as the relationship explores and goes to the places it should, which, it very much looks like it is, just with baby steps. Obviously they’re my favorite couple and Callie is my favorite character but I have to say I really enjoy Owen. Kevin McKidd is his name? I think he does great, and is great opposite the awesome Christina. He’s really likable even though he can be you know army guy bad ass. He reminds me of a super hero action figure. Anyway, I’ve watched this episode four times. =)
@FiglioPerduto, While I am kinda frustrated at the slow pace, I appreciate it. I get that there are a lot of people that need time to adjust to this story. And what is beautiful is that they are adjusting. I really think that if they keep going with this story as it is, then this couple will last out until the end. Because they are both likeable characters and the story is not really “In your face” kinda thing which is the common complaint. Right now though I think the writers are doing a superb job. Despite the fact that Callie and Arizona have hugged a few times already, yet not in this episode when they should have x)

“One small peck on the lips fills the quota for lesbian physical contact for one episode”
Actually, it was a peck on the cheek. If you look back Callie turns her head and when they pan back in, she turns her head back. *Yes i have HD and watching this scene 400 times helped in noticing that*. Still waiting for the first REAL kiss of the season
@frau, Yeah, after watching it another three times last night before bed I came to the same conclusion. But in my head… It is on the lips. x)

First off, I would like to say that I have read every single fan fiction that you have posted on lj, every comment you have on abc and currently hooked on your latest fic “Out with the old”. I am pretty much obsessed with your writing.
Your review simply captured what I went through with the episode. Callie scared the living crap out of me when she sort of let it sink in that this gorgeous lady in front of her was telling her she loves her. For me, that made up for the lack of physical contact and far away peck on the lips. But like you mentioned on abc, I will also give Shonda and Co the benefit of the doubt that Callie will start coming out and being more comfortable with the physical side of their relationship and comforting, George screwed with her pretty badly but right now, I view that ILY as the start of the physical side of this relationship and like Arizona said, Callie needs to step up and Callie trying to stay awake was certainly a step in the right direction.
I am also motivated by Shonda tweeting about the kiss in an upcoming episode; I hope it doesn’t end up with the same fate as the Callie/Arizona hug promo pic.
And I raise my hand as an “Arizona Rocks” member. I loved this woman the day she showed Callie (who I simply adore alongside with SaRa) that she is absolutely worth loving. She has helped her grow and I would certainly love any human being who treats Callie with respect, love and puts her first.
@GAaddict, Haha I have a stalker? Awesome! I feel kinda special now and like “Wow! Yay!”
I really dont think Shonda would twitter something like that and then cut it as she is not one for releasing spoilers herself. So I think that was made to make fans happy, especially as Callie and Arizona are becoming more intimate and people are accepting it. This was her way of saying “Ok guys its coming, so either be happy or be prepared.” Like covering all the bases. All the CA fans are ecstatic over it and the ones not so keen on the physical are warned. She wouldn’t back out on that.
And I totally agree, I think that the I love yous will make Callie more at ease. Arizona doesn’t strike me as the sort of person to throw those words around so hopefully Callie will relax and stop guarding herself.
I will see you around the ABC and LJ haunts

“The Chief, ever the capitalist optomist tells Arizona that she can do it.” HAHAh I LOL’ed. Great review AS always. I love myself some Calzone!
Akh, I did in fact notice that it was a peck on the cheek though. But I think it was made to be an illusion of a lip kiss without actually having to be. Ugh, another day, another ALMOST kiss.
@Shadx, I would love me some Calzona too… Maybe Santa will be really nice this year and send them both. I can dream.
I watched it a few times last night and I did have to finally concede it was on the cheek. But in my brain it will always be on the lips. x)

Great review (:
Looking forward to their next real kiss!!
This one was just on the cheek
Oh boy, im still satisfied
@wendy, I was really satisfied by this episode. Not just with what happened on screen but the reaction off screen, with all the new fans and the turning of people that didn’t connect with Arizona before. It has been great to see

Aww, no evil beedy eyes hate this week? I was looking forward to the snarky hate.
The review was once again spot on (and hilarious)! Not much to add, Arizona/Jessica is awesome and this episode just sealed it. I am so glad that gay and straight people alike are growing to love Callie and Arizona as a couple. Shonda might actually know what she is doing with those two!
Can’t wait for next week’s review.
@kerigan, I did call her an Oompa Loompa
But I won’t write about her if I can help it… To give names to things gives them power xD
I am so happy they are being accepted too… You may have caught that from all my gushing xD
I can’t wait for next weeks review too! Who is doing it?!
November 10th, 2009 at 22:34
Jessica owned this episode! She was amazing, her acting was flawless.

And i looove Arizona, she’s cute, sweet, sexy, caring, compassionate and most of all she’s perfect for Callie <3
Cant wait for more Calzona scenes.
Your review was awesome Metriosity
@ElizabethJ, Thank you
And yes, she totally owned this episode. Without a doubt!
