6.08: Love. The greatest investment of all.
By Aussie Lee | November 9, 2009 | ![]()
I’m seriously thinking I should have shares in Kleenex… or whatever company is behind that brand of tissue because honestly… the way I’m going through them watching each episode this season, and then re-watching, and then watching some more… well, I’m darn well keeping the company in business just on my own! Honestly.. if you didn’t feel the emotion emanating from 6.08 Invest In Love, then sorry my friend, you were watching the wrong channel! Talk about riding the emotional rollercoaster though, what a trip. And all in the space of 42 minutes 12 seconds. Not bad for a show that is apparently to some, dying in the ferryboat waters. Piffle I say to that.. absolute piffle!
And why am I piffling so much.. well how about I tell you why. How about I start from the beginning.. always a good place to start right? So lets cut to the first scene with Callie… I know you all wanna! So it’s 4am in the morning and Callie is sleeping like a beauty… though rather haphazardly in the bed but they are the details we all like to see right? But who do I spy with my little eye? First word S, second word A. That’s right.. a Snoring Arizona. So the woman does have a flaw.. haha.. sorry.. couldn’t resist! Anywhoo…. I gotta say it was a great scene. A beeping buzzer going off waking the tree lopper but as Arizona realizes the buzzer ain’t hers with great jubilation, she jumps back into bed with the energy of someone who shouldn’t have that much energy after just being woken at 4am *better get that looked at hun*. So it was either the force of her bouncing on the bed or the fact that Callie looked like she was already half hanging out of it, whatever it was, it caused Callie to slide elegantly to the floor in one swift ballerina like movement. Ok ok .. so maybe not so graceful but so damn funny!! As Arizona so happily informs her girlfriend that it’s her buzzer and to wake up.. you hear a muffled… “I’m up” come from somewhere on the floor. Classic! The poor love had her face planted on the floor boards but she still managed to communicate. Talent!
But, and you know there’s a but, it’s Callie who has the last laugh, cause Arizona’s buzzer is starting to sing a tune as well… so Callie endeavours to unbury Arizona from under the covers and shoves her pager in her face with a little chuckle which said ..”Not so fast sleepy head…” So they are both called into the hospital and confronted by Owen as they walk through the swinging doors. Honestly.. between the pair of them.. I was surprised they were able to open them cause it still looked like Arizona was hiding under the covers and Callie was face planted on the floor.

Doesn’t take Callie long to wake up though…. she has the case of all cases. While she thinks she’s been called in to fix a few broken bones, Hunt quickly tells her “More like fifty” and opens the door to reveal a young 15 year old girl looking in quite the broken state. Callie is intrigued and well .. I’m just shocked that the girl is still conscious!! Yeeeeouuucchhhh!! So there’s only one place for Callie’s patient.. and that’s the OR .. STAT! And as they say, let the race begin!! Callie appears in the hall yelling instructions for more packed cells. As they round the bend, Arizona is at their side, entering the race from a side street..…. Callie is focused.. eyes on the finish line… steps moving faster…each gaining speed and space with their arguments for why their patient is more important than the other… but it’s Arizona who zooms past as a doe eyed deer decided to step out off the side of the road and put a halt to Callie & Owen’s progress! Darn unpredictable wildlife!!! But still, Callie uses the Doey thing to her advantage and tells it to run off and book another OR while Arizona speeds off to do what she does best.
Ok so next it’s refueling time and coffee all round for Callie. Honestly.. she bounds around that corner waaayyyy to jovial for someone who’s been up since 4am in the morning but hey, the coffee must be strong! The race now over she hands off a coffee to Arizona who’s already chugged one down. The poor love must be thirsty! They are soon joined by Owen again, this time not babbling about a broken patient but a broken Cristina. Apparently they need to team up and prepare themselves for a cranky Cristina and Callie is to prepare to bore the brunt of some of the crankiness, much to Callie’s dislike.

Owen: Ok when we see Cristina she is going to be mad.. She’s going to be mad at me for not paging her last night.. possibly mad at you for not waking her up either .. *insert ‘you’ve got to be kidding me’ Callie look here*.. Now I am handling this. Do not engage her, do not provoke her, simply ignore her alright?”
Callie: Oh so that’s your plan? Ignore the scalpel hungry animal?
Owen: Yep, till I come up with something better….
*Enter strolling scalpel hungry animal, whisking past, with a slight smile* Yeah.. nice work Owen. We’ll make a mind reader out of you yet!!
So they were all heading in the same direction, to attend on a ped’s rotation with Arizona. Cozy! But all it took was for Arizona to start explaining how she runs her department and the look on Callie’s face said it all… adoration. Could you feel the investing in the love? No? Then maybe you could see it then, as Callie looked at Arizona like, yeah, my girl is good, damn good! Meanwhile, Owen grinned stupidly in the back, the Mercy West Losers looked at each other like giggling school girls and Cristina kept her mouth shut.. how unusual, oh wait. I retract that. She makes “That makes me wanna puke” signs behind Arizona’s back as they walk through the door. Welcome back Cristina. Anyways moving right along….
Callie has Cristina present on her young patient that broke waaayyy too many bones to mention. But it would appear that Cristina has a little competition yet again, this time in the form of a “little doctor boy”. Cristina presents rather slowly, coming to the realization that yep, she missed out on yet another surgery, plots for revenge forming slowly in her mind. Callie explains the next steps for more surgery and young ‘Dr Wallace’ informs of a correct dosage for weight, impressing those around him, all apart from Cristina who was yet again, been upstaged.. this time by a child.. albeit a cute, adorable and smart little tyke!
Ok so the hospital stuff out of the way, we finally get to see some chillaxing back at Cristina & Callie’s apartment. And there’s quite a crowd, with Callie in the kitchen doing her thang! As Arizona talks about the whopping $25mil that her patient’s parents have donated to the hospital, Callie places the first ‘order’ on the breakfast bar. Callie tells Arizona how amazing that amount of money is and how it will help so many kids as Mark whinges in the background, looking for his ego under the cushions on the sofa. As Callie yells the next ‘order’ I find myself thinking, hey.. I want a bit of that action…“I’ll have a cuppa, make it sweet, side of barely cooked toast with a sprinkling of vegemite, drown it in butter and don’t hold a thing!” She didn’t hear me darn it, as she was distracted by Little Grey dropping the announcement the donation was also arriving on Arizona’s birthday. So, Callie not to be aware of Arizona’s birthday, hard to imagine, but this is t.v. so meh.. moving right along.

Callie: Ummm.. how does Little Grey know about your birthday and I don’t…
Arizona: Birthday’s are just days like any other days, I don’t like them, I don’t celebrate them, no big deal. $25 million dollars.. that’s a big deal.
Yeah.. I’m with you there Dr R… just another day! But then cue the cute couply moment!! Did I just see a peck between these two?? *rewind* Yes I do believe I did… abliet from another state!! Showing us the Calzone love Shonda!! WOOT! This is progress people! Yes yes.. it may be small.. but I have an eye for detail and those are the details that count, right Calzone fans?? As Arizona takes off for the hospital, Callie is left with a pondering look on her face, trying to gauge exactly how she was to react to this particular bit of information…
Callie: She’s downplaying it right.. I mean I’m her girlfriend, I have to do something for her birthday right??
Owen: Yes .. in unison with Cristina: No! (fat lot of help they are!)
Then it’s left up to the two couch dwellers, Lexie & Mark! Little Grey has a brain explosion from the coffee and suggests a surprise party!! Oh YAY people! But Mark is quick to squish that idea under his negativity, describing surprise parties as hostile, dark, with people who jump out and scream at you and that they never come to any good. I was kinda on his side this time a little. I don’t know.. Arizona said she didn’t like to celebrate the occasion.. dinner yeah… surprise it’s your birthday.. not so. But what would I know!! All Callie wants to do is make her girl happy and who was anyone to stop her! Not I!
So it was off to the hospital for Callie, to tend to her young broken in many places patient. She announces to the parents that they found psilocybin in her bloodstream and as that flew over my head too (hey I ain’t no toxicologist) it was that Mercy West dude who, surprise surprise, instantly knew what they meant saying “She was schrooming.” Well I wish he’d schroom his way right out of there back to wherever he came from but meh.. no such luck. Ahhhh so it was the old have a few magic mushrooms and let’s see if I can fly trick. But what astounded Callie the most was how the father called his daughter a disappointment without a second thought, only to have her shut him down and shut him down good. Ahhhh I like a girl who without missing a beat can bring someone to shrink into obscurity by the use of a few well chosen and perfectly calculated words. Genius. The look on her father’s face said it all.. while the look on Cristina’s face said.. “Yep you’re a genius too.. I like you..”

Next Callie is in the OR working on fixing the schrooming girl’s breakages, joking with Owen about exactly what her father would have done if she ever talked to him like that, yet decided to leave that alone! Callie’s finished her part and as they take a look at her handy work the patient starts to code. They soon discover there’s a problem with her heart and as Callie frantically does what she can, Cristina and Owen argue about their next step to save her life. Cristina knows what needs to be done but Owen has said they will wait for cardio specialist to get there. As things worsen for the girl that she can relate to, Cristina says “Screw this” and goes all gung ho, grabbing a scalpel and preparing to open the girls chest! WOAH!! As Callie yells “Oh Yang really??” and Hunt still trying to stop her, it’s the Mercy West dude to go all badass and help Cristina out. Owen and Callie exchange “Oh no she just didn’t” glances before returning to their job at hand. And us as viewers were left wondering where such a disregard for authority would lead.
Callie wants to share the hottest gossip on the surgery floor with Arizona but is stopped mid sentence purely by the look on Arizona’s face. This was no look of joy.. this was a look of concern, of worry, the first time I can recall seeing Arizona be unsure of herself. But it would just take a few words from Callie to make her feel right, to give her the confidence to go and perform surgery on her patient and save that little boy’s life.
Arizona: I can’t go into the OR feeling like this.. so I need you to tell me that I’m great… and make me hear it…
Callie: You are great. You. Are. Great.
Arizona: Thank you.
Some people have been left perplexed by that exchange saying where was the hug? Where was comforting reassurance? Well the way I saw it, it was there and more. To me, Arizona was in a zone, like the zone a player gets in before a big game of whatever it may be. And in that moment, she didn’t need her girlfriend going all gooey on her. No. She needed someone to be firm and honest and to be able to lift her spirit to where it needed to be. Arizona said herself.. all she wanted was to be told she was great. Three little words. You. Are. Great. To me, she needed reassurance from the one person who was most important to her emotionally yet the one person who knew her best professionally and would keep it that way right before she was about to step into the OR to save a child’s life. And Callie delivered.
What Callie didn’t expect, and well neither did I for that matter, was to walk into her apartment after a hard night in surgery to be faced with an irate Arizona who was upset that Callie was not there to offer her support when she really needed it.

Callie: Ok ok so you’re scared and so you’re picking a fight. You get that yeah?
Arizona: Yeah yeah fine, whatever. But I have helped you through crisis after crisis and once I thought that I could come here tonight and I could get something…………
And who should walk through the door but an arguing Owina! Bad timing much?? So as they argue over our girls, it’s the talk of Cristina’s gung ho operating style on a child in the OR that brings Arizona back to snap at Callie again, this time for not telling her about the situation. Callie tries her best to explain she hadn’t yet had the chance but it just goes pear shaped from then on, as Arizona’s beeper beeps, this time not on happy ground and she leaves the apartment in a horrible mood. Cristina refers to their respective partners as ‘Bitches’ and I nearly choke on my popcorn cause that broke the tension at that point and almost my windpipe!

What proceeded next was nothing short of heartbreaking. Wallace loses his battle for life and as Arizona opens the door to the apartment, Callie yells “SURPRISE” as people jump around all happy birthday like, hoping to make Arizona feel special on her birthday. Little did poor Callie know what had transpired at the hospital and Arizona leaves the apartment in tears, Callie close at her heels. I’ve replayed this scene a few times over because at first it just felt wrong again, that there was no physical contact. I mean your girlfriend is crying before you, surely you’d hug her or something right? But you know.. I think it was again just right. I understand that sometimes people just need to not have someone in their space at times of sadness. They just need that space. We’ve never seen Arizona in this position before, to be the vulnerable one, and if you think about it, Callie has never been good with reacting to outbursts of emotion, let alone sadness as this is. I really think they were just showing that Callie just wasn’t sure how to empathise and I’m sure there was a staggered attempt there for some contact as Arizona walked away, but Callie I think sensed Arizona just needed her space at that point. Well that was rather longwinded wasn’t it? I don’t believe Shonda is downplaying the touchy feely, I think they are just emphasizing on Callie’s emotional boundaries.

By now I was a blubbering mess after Arizona had been with Wallace’s parents, the Kleenex were going everywhere! Who knew what was about to happen next though. Arizona returns to find a more gracious and slightly less clothed Callie draped on the couch, obviously awaiting her girlfriend’s return. Callie wakes to find Arizona looking down on her and is immediately into party mode. The girl has got some go, you’ve gotta give her that!
Callie: Oh.. Oh I’m awake. I’m umm… I’m see. I’m totally awake. Umm.. there’s hats and gifts and donuts and lingerie, and *insert the useless paper horn sound here*.. really …*giggles*
Love Callie here. She’s doing what she knows best and that is continue to try to make her girlfriend happy in light of everything that has happened between them. She could have easily just gone to bed and hope for happiness the next morning but no. She’s invested, she’s invested in doing everything she can to make Arizona feel a little joy. What she didn’t expect was to hear Arizona say those three little words….
Arizona: I love you.
It stops Callie in her tracks. Lucky she was sitting down cause I’m sure she would have had to after that. I know I sure did.. and no I wasn’t standing but so giddy you could have knocked me over with a feather. For once in her life, it was someone else professing their love for her first. Arizona loved her. Arizona loved her. After all they had been through that night and throughout their short relationship, she loved her. This is new for Callie so you can’t blame the look of absolute relief on her face as she asks….

Callie: You do?
Arizona: I do.

And as the screen fades to black, I hear Callie say… “I love you too”. A.m.a.z.i.n.g. I proceed to pass out from forgetting to breathe while watching that exchange. Talk about entrancing. That, my friends, was by far the most intimate exchange of all. Blah I say to a hug or a kiss at this stage. If you can’t sense all the emotions you need in those three words, then you are missing the ferry boat people. Those three words – I. Love. You. It always says it all in my book. It was absolutely beautiful.
I’ve got to hand it to Shonda…. We hollered for her to show us the Calzone love and she showed us the love and then some. They are building this relationship gently and slowly and giving it style and grace. I’m so far into this Calzone ship, I might as well be a floorboard on the deck. I’m invested.. are you?
Till next time,

Fantastic review! It pulled me right through the episode again.
I totally agree with you that the lack of physical comfort from Callie is more of an emotional boundary issues with her that Shonda and the writers are trying to show rather than just not wanting them to touch (because it makes no sense that we would have kissing/hugs/hand holding prior to this and then having then suddenly decide to not have them physically touch again). Like you very well said, Callie is not the huggy type person, and I bet she never in her life had to be the comforting one (1. she has only dated men prior to recently, 2. she is a bit emotionally stunted due to all the crap she has gone through, 3. She has never seen Arizona in any type of broken emotional state (the authority thing is just cute and not very serious) and therefore has no basis to know how to deal with that), so while I (and thousands of fangirls) was yelling at Callie to “HUG HER dammit!”, I understand why she did not, though it seems to me like she was debating in her head as to whether she should as AZ walked away.
“I’ve got to hand it to Shonda…. We hollered for her to show us the Calzone love and she showed us the love and then some. They are building this relationship gently and slowly and giving it style and grace”
Completely indubitably concurred! I really like the fact that this relationship is building up slow and shows gracefulness in the way it is being handled. They actually got a real, emotional, meaningful “I love you” scene, probably one of the best written ILY scene on TV with the Meredith “choose me” speech and Derek’s confession at the end of the bomb episode back in season 2.
Shonda and Co. have been doing a fantastic job on those two and I have a feeling that we are going to be seeing plenty of fluffy Callie/Arizona love as they seem completely invested in the couple.
@kerigan_smh, Thanks for your awesome comment. I’m glad you liked the review and I have to say I concur with your comments as well!
Bring on the fluffy love I say too!!

I totally agree about Callie being emotionally stunted. As much as I wanted her to hug AZ (especially when she was crying about Wallace), I really feel like it was in character for Callie to not know what to do in that situation. H*ll, for that matter, AZ didn’t hug Callie when George died either. She just told her to go home and eat donuts. Granted, they were at work and in front of patients at the time, and this is further into their relationship, but still. It’s hard to know what to do when some dies, it’s not like anything you say will make it better. I think the ILY scene was perfect…emotional, quiet, beautiful. And the fact that Callie had donuts for AZ showed that she was trying to be supportive, since apparently that’s AZ’s way of dealing with grief. I thought that was a nice touch. I loved this episode! Great review!
@savache27, Good point about the hugging when George died scenario. Very good point.
And ITA with your comment.. well said.
Thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed the read!

The best thing to wake up to. Your review. You totally nailed this episode.
After reading your ideas why there was a lack of physical contact I am more appeased that there wasn’t. And I am really hopeful at Shonda’s twittering.
I will do what I usually do now and go take another read of your review
Awesome job huh! As always! Despite the dentist
@Metriosity, Thanks so much! I’m glad I made sense in the lack of contact regard… I knew what I meant just whether others would! LOL!
As for the dentist, Bruce Chan called me back… looks like my dentist might be needing a dentist of his own!
Thanks for reading it!

hey AL,
Great review! I’m as invested in Callie as you are, and I think your points about Callie being a bit tentative on the emotional front are well-taken. She’s only now starting to get her footing with AZ, after been devestated by her previous relationships. The reserve is, I think, intentional, until she regains her confidence. That AZ said she loved her, first, is huge! I think her cofidence will grow from there, hopefully resulting in more physical contact, and maybe fewer Grey’s fans yelling at the TV! Wonderfuls portayals by both SR and JCap! Hope Shonda and Co. keep it on course!
@findyourgrail52, Well welcome to the investment!
And yes… of course.. well said to mention Sara and Jessica for their amazing acting. I’ll second that!
Fingers crossed for a long, long ride, in whatever form it takes!
Thanks for reading and taking the time to comment! Cause we all know.. comments = lurrrrvvvee

Hahaha, a flaw, better be, because she will be too perfect! But her snores her cute!
“it caused Callie to slide elegantly to the floor in one swift ballerina like movement.” Your sentences are for gold!
How the girlfriend doesn’t know the birthday of HER girlfriend!?.. Smooth Callie..
The last scene melt my heart!!.. so sweet! LOOOOVE!
In one moment I felt scared because I thought Callie would not answer, It wont be much trouble because we how Grey’s work so.. But suddenly I heard “I love you too” and my heart stop beating. Beautiful!
Now comes the worst part, because in Grey’s nothing can last…
Is always good to read you.. Thanks for cheer me up this afternoon (crapy day at lab, again)!
I adore this episode and your review is not far behind
See ya!
p.s.: Totally invested!
@Bast, Awe.. glad I could help cheer you up!! Thanks for your lovely comment yet again!

Once again, a MOST excellent review!
“Did I just see a peck between these two?? *rewind* Yes I do believe I did… abliet from another state!!” This made me laugh so hard!! 1) because I thought the same thing when I watched it, we were sooooo far away from that kiss, and 2) because it was just so freaking funny! Thank you.
I actually never thought about Callie’s lack of contact being an emotional/personal thing, but it totally makes sense. And it makes me feel so much better thinking about it that way because it means the writers are remembering their characters and staying true to them, and I like that. So thanks for opening my eyes to that one because I might have gone on to talk trash about the lack of contact, again, but it all makes sense now!
Oh, and that snore from Arizona… totally cute. Sexy cute even…
And I 100% agree with everything else you said, so I really have nothing more to say.
Great review! Can’t wait until next week!
@calzona24, Thanks!! Glad I could give you a good laugh!!
And another perspective on the whole lack of the touchy feely!
Shonda’s been tweeting about that lately though so here’s hoping!
Thanks again for your comment.. I appreciate it!

Great review. I totally LOVED this episode and I LOVE Callie and Arizona, they are by far my favorites. I’m pretty sure I watched the “I Love You” scene about 50 times. It was so emotional. When it happened I just BURST out crying and I couldn’t stop. Can’t wait for another episode with them as the central characters!!
Keep up the great work!!!!
