Spoilers: TV Guide scoop
By Metriosity | November 18, 2009 | ![]()
TV Guide’s Andrea Simpson has been catching up with Shonda and trying to learn a little more about Thursdays festive episode, Holidaze.
The Seattle Grace docs are officially making their 2009 rounds and Grey’s Anatomy creator Shondra Rhimes promises a pulse-pounding end to the year and new beginnings in 2010.
“It’s starting to get really exciting, especially as we head towards these episodes that end the year and start the new year,” Rhimes told TV Guide Magazine at “The Princess and the Frog” premiere at Walt Disney Studios. “We’ve got some really great stuff coming.”
Now that Owen and Christina are a couple, will the new resident surgeon Teddy Altman – aka “cardio doc” (played by Kim Raver) – put a heart-stopping wrench in their fledgling romance? Rhimes urges fans to stayed tuned.
“Yes, but not how you’d expect,” revealed Rhimes. “I think everyone assumes it’s going to go one way. It’s a very different story than we’ve ever told before.”
From new lovebirds to married couples, Meredith and Derek will continue to take the audience on a roller coaster ride through their typical emotional highs and lows – and yet even more challenges await the couple.
“I think a lot of what’s going on with them is watching them come into their own as doctors [and] watching what goes on between them in the hospital situation,” said Rhimes.
With the Chief falling off the wagon once again, leaving his wife’s imagination to run wild – and straight down to the hospital where she accuses Dr. Bailey of having an affair with him – the repercussions will go a lot deeper than just the bottom of the bottle.
“That’s going to get a little complicated,” she said.“That’s going to get more complicated than I think anybody expects.”
Maybe another botched surgery?
“We’re not going to do the botched surgery conflict,” added Rhimes.“I really want to portray the real story and what happens when a doctor goes off the wagon and how they deal with that.”
As for the Chief’s wife Adele (played by Loretta Divine), expect to see more of her.
“We love to have her. There’s going to be more coming up with them. I think you’re going to see what happens to the marriage and what happens to him at the hospital.”
We’ve also seen the dramatic return of Izzie Stevens, but it turns out that her welcome back will be somewhat short-lived, with ABC confirming that Katherine Heigl will soon be leaving again for maternity leave.
“She’s going to be taking a leave,” Shonda also confirmed. “We adapt and change. That’s what that means,” she said of what Heigl’s departure will mean for the show’s storyline.
As for how long Heigl’s locker will be empty is still unknown.
“I don’t know how long, but I think it’s wonderful that a mother wants to spend time with her baby. So I have no problems with that,” said Rhimes.
Off camera, Mr. McSteamy himself Eric Dane is expecting his first child with wife Rebecca Gayheart, while in typical life-imitating-art fashion, on screen Mark Sloane’s holiday happiness with Lexie could be jingle bell rocked by the arrival of a character from his past, which begs the question: does Dr. Sloane have a grown up child?
“Yes!” revealed Rhimes. “And that’s going to be fairly interesting. We’re going to dive very far into Mark Sloan and discover a bunch of stuff.”
We already know he’s a master with the scalpel and it seems he’s got more than just the arrogant appeal and handsome good looks fans have grown to love and hate.
“It’s going to be more than just the pretty face,” she added. “Also just how he would actually cope with something serious.”

I just missed some Calzona information…
Anyway, I’m already sad with this hiatus, but very happy with Holidaze, I love holiday’s episodes. ^^

I’m a little (a lot) upset that this episode is only going to be an hour. I mean we’re covering Thanksgiving to New Year’s and all the drama in between, not to mention its the last episode of the year, and it’s only an hour??
I’m just a little nervous that some things, or some people (Calzona) will be left out. Not only did Shonda not even mention Calzona, but there is no sign of Callie in any of the promo pics either. I’m trying not to jump to conclusions but how are they going to ‘properly’ fit over a month and a half worth of ‘real’ time in 42 minutes? Guess I’ll have to wait and see, and hopefully be surprised…

I can’t wait to know more about Mark and his past!
I am looking foward to see what’s in store for Meredith and Derek, and for the Teddy/Cristina/Owen triangle how it will play out!
