6.09: New History: A “Live” Review!
By Aussie Lee | November 19, 2009 | ![]()
I bet all of you were wondering what happened to the reviews? Aussie Lee and Metriosity usually have something to say right? This week, neither of us could think of anything to put on paper. Writers block came in, beat us with a rubber chicken and ran away laughing at our literary demise. But then inspiration hit! We always have plenty to say on MSN so why not write our review there!? After several minutes of figuring out how this would work, we decided to just ditch a plan and start talking. Here is what we came up with, minus the interesting details like bathroom breaks, the dog crushing Metriosity’s chest and drink preferences. It’s a new format for a New History. We are sure come review time after 6.10 the floodgates will have opened and you won’t be able to shut either of us up.
But for this week.. we hope you enjoy!
Metriosity says:
Ok… So… Episode 6:09… Honestly. I wasn’t really that happy with it.
Aussie Lee says:
Well I would have to agree and disagree. Yes… sometimes I like fences!

Metriosity says:
You and those fences. Don’t get me wrong there were parts I liked. But for the most part I felt myself zoning out. It was weird, the acting was great but the story seemed off to me. Like Izzie and her teacher. I get that she wanted a great neuro surgeon to take a look at him. But she had to bring him personally? Like that wasn’t begging for trouble.
Aussie Lee says:
Yes I have to agree on the zoning, so much so that I have to have it playing in the background right now to actually remember what happened! As for Izzie, she wasn’t only begging for trouble, she was begging for attention. That’s the one thing I don’t like about her. It’s allllll about the Izzie.
Metriosity says:
Oh my god, I totally wanted to say that but was scared I might incur wrath of some kind. Ever since the beginning, Izzie has been wanting attention in any way possible. She seems to want everything that other people have. Like George. It has always bothered me. I felt a surge of pride for Alex turning it around on her and saying he didn’t forgive her for not giving him the benefit of the doubt.
Aussie Lee says:
Well if it brings on the wrath, then so be it. Izzie used to be good.. actually no.. she used to be GREAT.. but the Izzie now just makes me yawn and want to change the channel. But enough about her, that’s too much already! So how about Bailey? Did she rock or did she ROCK?

Metriosity says:
Bailey was freakin’ awesome. She did what she always does, she stepped up and held the fort while things where falling apart around her. It was fantastic to finally see her get a decent amount of screen time this week. She has been in the shadows a little of late. The most brilliant part was her interactions with Adele. They play so well off of one another. Adele terrifies and fascinates me.
Aussie Lee says:
Haha! Terrifies and fascinates! Good points! Yes she was awesome. I love Bailey. Bailey is like the glue that holds the book together. She is like the backbone of the show, the spine of the book, the engine that runs the car.. ok ok.. enough of the analogies. So for me this episode was no different. Her straight faced humour and her reactions to Adele’s accusation of an affair with the Chief were priceless!!
Metriosity says:
When Adele asked if she was having an affair with the Chief, Baileys face had me cracking up. Having Mark and Callie there like two school kids watching their teacher get busted just added to the side splitting. I mean Adele totally bore down on Bailey and Bailey just stood there like Adele had told her the earth was flat. Her face said “Seriously? Where are the hidden cameras?”

Aussie Lee says:
Exactly!! But of course we can’t forget Callie & Mark’s input.. as valuable as it was. Especially Callie’s analogy of work husband’s and work wife’s. Classic! Then in true husband and wife style, Mark tries to interject only to be told that nobody was talking to him. Hilarious!! And then as soon as the affair air had cleared, Callie was on the phone texting.. or do you think she was googling wiki on this one?
Metriosity says:
I think she was texting. Gossip spreads fast around there. I wonder if she was texting Arizona with the gossip. They were so into listening to that whole thing. Between the two of them I think they are the gossip mill. I mean Mark at lunch, he was like a housewife leaning over the garden fence. It was brilliant. He was so excited to be spreading the gossip. Reminded me of us really…. “Let me put it up!!!!” “Nuh uh!!! I wanna!!!”
Aussie Lee says:
Ahhh yes…. maybe he should be renamed McGossip perhaps? So that brings me to Teddy.. yes I’m going to bring her up first and call on it first so there!! I’m going to say.. I love her! Yes I do.. there I said it. I’m calling it early. I think she is going to be an amazing dynamic in the show, a wild side to the Owina triangle and a rocking Cardio God. I’m impressed already with her style and the way she handles the situations she’s confronted with and does not hold back when it comes to Yang. Now THAT dynamic there.. between the two of them .. will be good to watch just on it’s own. In the words of Arizona… “I like her!”

Metriosity says:
Here is where I get to perch on the fence. So move over. I like her, the style (Don’t shoot me, but no one can be worse than Hahn….) But I have this crazy feeling that this whole triangle thing that could happen with her, Owen and Cristina won’t be focused on Owen…. I mean I think Cristina is going to be bowled over with her and Owen will be like “What the hell?” That would be cool drama but I am a big softy and I really want to see Cristina all settled and happy. Not jilted or shot down. I know, happy endings make bad TV but they make me happy, and that is all that matters right?
Aussie Lee says:
Well no one likes anyone to be unhappy for sure.. especially a unhappy Metriosity right? There’s a wrath all on it’s own there!
Ok..back to Teddy. Yes the way they are going to play out the Owina story now with Teddy around will be interesting but I can’t see the jilting or the shooting down happening this time. Cristina, in my opinion, may just finally be able to have the teacher she deserves and that will enable a happier Cristina to emerge and provide that happy ending. Of course with a fair share of drama thrown in between her and Owen. It is Grey’s right??
Metriosity says:
Unhappy me is catastrophic. I do get the feeling that Shonda and the crew are trying to settle everyone down. I am cautiously hoping that the couples will be sticking together as they are. Sure, throw some drama in there and make us all go “Oh no they didn’t!” but I am happy with the current pairings. With maybe the exception of the Chief and Adele. Adele needs to kick his ass. She has been walked over by him so often and keeps coming back. Totally wouldn’t expect that from her.
Aussie Lee says:
Too right! Adele definitely needs to be the wifewife and sort him out! Now to the Attendings Table -v- Resident Table. This kind of ‘pairing’ I do like! This is the kind of banter that I’ve missed in the show and they are finally bringing it back to the table. Haha.. I made a funny … did ya get it?? No.. hmm… oookkkk.. moving on. I’ve always said I missed the funny in the show and I felt a bit of it was coming back through this part. Oh and like you said, the Mark banter.. he always guaranteed a good laugh and he sure didn’t miss his chance this time. Then the resident’s table…with 3 of the original 5.. in their fine form. Do you see them separately as a good or a bad thing?

Metriosity says:
Sorry if there was a long pause, I was looking for your funny. I think I blinked and missed it. The two tables were great. It was funny that the Attendings were all chilled out and enjoying themselves. Owen was the only one slightly edgy. Then it was mirrored on the residents. Oh man, when Alex shouted down Cristina and stormed off I was laughing like crazy. Poor Cristina, she got such a verbal beating this episode. Alex and Teddy both tore her a new one x) Oh and Izzie. Forgot about that one!
Aussie Lee says:
Yeah well Cristina may have copped a verbal beating for sure but she was able to show her original colours when she danced around while telling Mer about the surgery. That was the Cristina of old! And then Alex… well that was, in my opinion, an applaudable moment. When Izzie gave him her 100th cold shoulder for the day, he was able to give her the comebacks of all comebacks. You laughed and I stood and high fived myself! Which in all reality is quite the hard task but meh.. I achieved it with barely a scratch. Izzie on the other hand.. I hope she walked out of there wounded because she deserved that… and then some.

Metriosity says:
I would have paid to see you try and high five yourself. You may be unscathed, but how is the dog? I had this big thought in my head about Alex and Izzie and I totally lost it. Oddly it was complimentary to Izzie… Uh… Crud… What was it…? Oh! Alex has this thing where he needs to care for the women in his life. He has to be the saviour, the care giver. Izzie leaving him while all cancer recovery style and doing her own thing, should have told him that she can take care of herself. I think he needs to get that. He doesn’t have to be the one to save everything. While Izzie was a bit of an ass for not allowing him to talk it out, he did need to be shown that he isn’t always right. With him and Izzie, they seem to get their feelings out there through fighting. Maybe this fight will do what all the others have done, put them closer together.
Aussie Lee says:
Need a drink after that ramble? Sheesh! And yes.. as much as it pains me to say it.. I have to agree with that. Great points! So who do we have left? Oh.. The Ass.. oops I mean .. The Chief. His appearances this season have been way below par in my opinion and while this week really didn’t do anything for me either, his whole last scene at the bar really shed some light on his behaviour. I really liked how they retraced his ’steps’ so to speak with all the wrongs that have happened thus far and not to mention the big woopsie while performing surgery where he nicked the bile duct of his patient. Instead of covering up the mess.. he had the mess covered for him by his workwife.

Metriosity says:
The Chief has been difficult for me to like all season. I get that he is under stress, but he has made so many mistakes. Like firing April. Yes, she was a Mercy Wester (Boo hiss) but really she didn’t deserve to be fired. He was negligent to her as much as she was to the patient. Then he fired Izzie, which in the grand scheme of things was a tad late and for a tiny thing. Then Derek. Shouting down everyone and blaming them for everything. And instead of owning up, he hits the drink. It is such a weak way out. So many people rely on that guy and he bottles it… Literally. He needs to step down and let Bailey take over. He has been grooming her since like forever. Let her be the boss now. Or me. I will totally do it. I’m not a Dr but I could totally stand there and look condescending!
Aussie Lee says:
I could so see you standing in for him for sure. Just standing there. Yep that’s about what I could see. That is all.
Metriosity says:
If I could fire you, I would.
Aussie Lee says:
And if I could fire you, I.. oh wait.. I can!
Metriosity says:
That is very true. But you would miss me too much. I would like to give an honorable mention to Arizona. People are saying she was flirting with Teddy. To that I say “You crazy!” She is just a nice person. The whole birdies scrub cap thingy-ma-bob was a set up for Owen to appease Cristina. Arizona as the new girl was totally just trying to help Teddy fit in. Plus… She was brilliant at lunch. The little smile after Callie said it was her that drove Hahn away. And the kick under the table. Atta girl!
Aussie Lee says:
And what a worthy mention that is too. Arizona certainly was spreading the joy. I’m sure she could in some ways totally relate to Teddy as it wasn’t too long ago that Arizona was the new doc on the block as well. Ok now onto the coupling (is that even a word?) of the hour. MerDer. I have to say I was happy to see Mer back. I don’t know.. she’s like a big sister in a way to them all and while some think she was interfering in the whole Alex/Izzie issue, I think she was doing what she thought best, and trying to bring them back together to at least talk. Her relaying information to Alex, I feel, was her way of trying to bridge the gap between two people she knows love each other dearly and being the Happy Meredith now, she also wants to see others happy around her.

Metriosity says:
What sucks is that while she is trying to make everyone else happy, she was stuck with nothing to do. All the Mercy Westers poaching the surgeries and shunting her into the skills lab. Though, she did get five seconds of kissin’ in there, which is more than anyone else got that episode. So it wasn’t all bad for her. I am still finding it hard to adjust to happy Mer though. I am sure I will get used to it in the end. It’s good to have her back though. Can’t wait to see her hosting the dinner for next episode. Dinners traditionally don’t end brilliantly for her, or rather they never go exactly to plan.
So… are you ready to go scream after talking to me for so long?
Aussie Lee says:
Yeah I totally agree.. I’m happy for the happy and I’m sure you will get used to it… though I think there’s some tension ahead for these two so you won’t be without some dark or twisty for too long. It’s all part of the drama right? As for the screaming at you.. you can’t hear me from all the way over on the other side of the world? It started 2 minutes after we started this discussion!
Metriosity says:
I wondered what that was… I really thought it was my kid singing on Rockband…
Aussie Lee says:
*is off to search for the retrenchment clause in Metriosity’s contract*
Metriosity says:
*Knows you won’t fire me… Because I am right and I’m awesome.”
Aussie Lee says:
Yes well you keep on dreaming thinking that and I’m sure that one day, it may just come true! See .. I can be nice! Now you try!
Metriosity says:
Woah woah woah.. Being nice wasn’t on the beer mat contract I signed.
Aussie Lee says:
Oh I give up!! It’s like talking to a tree sometimes.. not that I do that.. much.. really.. honestly! Ok .. I’m quitting while I can. This was a new thing for both Metriosity and I to try out. We were both suffering a severe case of writer’s block… while I stared at a completely blank page, at least Metriosity got a paragraph out before the flow stopped for her. We thought we could bring a discussion together and compile a review in total. I know it’s a little different to our normal style but we hope you enjoyed it just the same! Let us know what you really think! Ok ok.. stop pulling on my sleeve.. you can have your turn now Metriosity! *I tell you it’s like dealing with a whiny 2 year old sometimes!*
Metriosity says:
Yeah, I know the feeling. *Eyes you* But anyway… Crazy Aussie’s aside, I uh… yeah what she said. Writers block smacked me between the eyes this week. Aussie Lee bailed me out by agreeing to this crazy scheme. Hope you all liked it! If not, well… We tried and we might both have to go cry somewhere. Me in my room, Aussie in a bar. Sound off below with comments, criticisms and other stuff beginning with C.
Till next time,
Aussie Lee xxoo

hahaha this review had me laughing out loud! it was a nice change! eventhough you both write awesome reviews, I liked this! I think you should do this once a month or something similar. Though not every week because I like both your reviews! Great job and hope you get over writer’s block soon!

@JillyBean032, Yeah, this won’t be a weekly thing… Don’t think I can take talking to Aussie Lee that often
Glad you liked the change up though. It was a nice change of pace for me to have someone else do 3/4 of the work.

Thanks so much, Aussie and Metriosity!
Reading what you have to say about Grey’s is always fun! And I’m already a big fan of whatever either of you writes (is that correct? forgive my english, please), you guys are so funny, and I loved the ideia of seeing you interact with each other!
About 6.09, I also really liked Teddy. Really! She’s awesome and it felt like she belongs there, at Seattle Grace – specially with the other attendings at lunch. The chemistry between Kim Raver and the rest of the cast was amazing.
And mostly I nodded and agreed to whatever else yous guys said, so…yeah, great job!
Looking forward to the reviews on Holidaze – and maybe another one like this? Just because it will be a loong time ’til another Grey’s episode airs.
Yeah, and also ’cause you rock =)

@mai_brazil, Your English is great
I can’t speak for Lee, but I’d do one of these another time. Just not all the time. We both have different styles so like doing our own thing. I am pretty amazed that this got such a positive response

Another crazy Aussie here…
I really enjoyed the change! I love reading each of your reviews but I liked having two in one today! I like JillyBean032’s suggestion that you should do this from time to time. Mix things up a bit and keep me on my toes!

Great job, guys! I really enjoyed this format. It was a nice change of pace. Plus, I completely get why you guys had writer’s block with this episode. Definitely not one of the better ones. It had some good highlights, all of which you pointed out…but for the most part I thought it was a snooze fest. Looking forward to the holiday episode and both of your reviews!

@savache27, Glad we weren’t the only ones who had difficulty with this episode. It was good. But not one of the ones I will remember for ever. Can’t wait for tonight! I hope the episode wakes me up!

Haha, I liked this way of reviewing! It was a funny change from the usual ones. Wouldn’t mind seeing them once in a while.
I liked a lot in this eppy; the MerDer, the lunch scene, the Teddy-Cristina scenes. My heart broke for Alex, but I can kind of see where Izzie’s coming from – she thought she was betrayed, she wasn’t prepared to come into the hospital and meet her former collegaues yet, and she had to distantiate herself somewhat. Anyway, looking forward to Holidaze a lot, with the exception of it being the last eppy for the year

Omg, that was so funny!! hahaha! I really loved this format, though I also love to read your reviews separately. I think you can change once in a while, when you get the writers block problem again. I would never mind “watching” you guys crazy dialog!
About the review, I pretty much agree with everything you said, as usual. The episode was… fine. Nothing really interesting happened. I was missing Mer at the hospital a lot, though, and I was glad to see her back, trying to fit again, among all the Mercy West and all troubles that SG is having lately. I like the happily married Meredith, she looks like the old Meredith, she’s concerned about her family and the hospital, but now in a more optimistic way.
About Izzie… Well, really, I didn’t miss her. I used to love her, she was once my favorite character (long, long time ago), she was a funny and positive, she was like… like some version of Arizona, but without the sweetness and the commitment and the experience. And less perky. But she was still nice. I was very sad when the Chief got her fired, that was totally unnecessary… But I was also upset with Kathy Heigl, cause I know she was taking a break on the show (to shoot a movie, ok, non excusable to me), that’s why Izzie was going too. And while away, Izzie wasn’t as nice as she used to be. She refused talking to Alex! I mean, she’s Izzie, she’s the one who goes after people to talk to them, to clarify things, to try to improve their relationship. She’s not the one who ignores people. And she was ignoring her HUSBAND! Not just anyone, not even a friend, but husband. Seriously? I didn’t like it. I felt sorry for Alex, very sorry. He was so worried, even after being left with just a note (
), he was worried about her and her health and all the IL-2 treatment and everything. And she comes back and acts like that… And now Kathy Heigl is taking another break (to take care of her baby, ok, I’ve said about it in another post, non excusable again to me)… So, to me, Izzie doesn’t need to come back. Really. Or she comes back and be Izzie, the real one, again, or just stay wherever she wants to be and let Alex live his life.
I’m even starting to like Reed! Seriously!
Oh, last thing, cause I always talk too muc here: Teddy. I’m with Aussie Lee, Teddy is great! I really like her and I’m sure she’ll make a great part on the show. I still didn’t figure out about the “non-conventional love triangle” (because I don’t really think Teddy is lesbian, right? nor Cristina! So what’s so different in this love triangle?), but I think she came for the good of Cristina’s character. I think she’ll make an excellent teacher (she proved it already) and their interaction will make Cristina grow more mature, even in relationship issues, in which, let’s face, Cristina isn’t very skilled! So, I’m very confident I’ll like Teddy for good and I hope she stays more than just few episodes.
I really don’t have much to say about Callie or Arizona, but it’s always nice to see them on the screen!
Loved the lunch scene and I also don’t think Arizona was hitting on Teddy about the birds on the cap. That’s just Arizona’s way-of-being. She’s a nice person who pays attention at animals in other people caps and stuff.
That’s it. I’ll stop writing like crazy now.
Again, love your reviews, just loved this one, so nice and funny, and it made me want to watch the dialog live, with a drink in one hand and maybe popcorn on the other! LOL!
Best wishes from Brazil. ^^

@Lorena, Well… I loved reading your review. You had more to say on the ep than I did… Man I envy you! I will admit I have never really been an Izzie fan. Most people know that. But this week I couldn’t pay attention to her scenes. I havent missed her being gone and I wont miss her when she goes again. Her commitment to the show has been lacking. Look at Ellen. She went through a pregnancy and birth and hasnt missed an episode. That is dedication.
Post a REPLY to this comment
@Metriosity, That IS exactly my point! That’s exactly what I say, I take Ellen’s example very often when I want to talk about commitment (most times I talk to myself, cause I really don’t have many people interested in my Grey’s mumbling
). She has a newborn at home, Stella is what? three months old? And we didn’t miss Meredith in ANY episode! She made sure we would have her in every episode. And needless to say she should have left, if she wanted to, of course nobody would oppose to that, being a new mother and everything. But she didn’t, she stayed.
So, Katherine = lack of commitment.
And I don’t like it.
And thank you, I really miss having someone to discuss my point of view about GA. So I love to post my never-ending comments here. I’m glad it didn’t annoyed you.

I’ve been waiting since Sunday for this Metriosity… Sunday.
But it was worth the wait! I loved the new format. It was very fun, and playful. And while I love reviews from each of you, this was definintely a nice little change. Fun, fun.
And I agree with pretty much everything you guys said. Very much a dull episode with some honorable mentions. Arizona, Bailey, Arizona, Callie, oh, and did I mention, Arizona.
Looking forward to the Holidaze review from you both!
“Because I am right and I’m awesome.” That was good. I liked that. Made me laugh.
