It’s barely 8am on the set of Grey’s Anatomy at Prospect Studios in Los Angeles but Jessica Capshaw is full of beans, with a zest that not even a double espresso can match. Casually dressed for an unseasonably chilly morning in leggings, a grey T-shirt, oversized cardigan and Hava-ianas, the new girl on the block at Seattle Grace Hospital is currently blazing a trail that has earned her a devoted female following, playing paediatric surgeon Dr Arizona Robbins.Her steamy clinch with fellow high-flying medic Callie Torres, played by Sara Ramirez, is turning into a full-blown relationship, making Grey’s a hot ticket as the only mainstream US drama to commit to a developing lesbian storyline, and Jessica the only lesbian series regular on network television. It has even spawned the Brangelina-style moniker ‘Calzona’ for the Sapphic pair, at which Jessica giggles: ‘We sound just like a pizza!’
Despite the early hour, there’s no Hollywood ego going on, just an easygoing banter before the interview begins. Having already played Jennifer Beals’ love interest Nadia Karella in ground-breaking lesbian drama The L Word, you might think that the 33-year-old vivacious blonde Capshaw was an obvious choice for the part. Not so, she laughs as she takes a slug of coffee and relives the excitement of landing a role in her favourite TV show.
