1×02: Ferry Boats and Elevators

Some things hit you with full force. They cut into the very essence of who you are, and change you. Sometimes this kind of change no longer allows you to let anyone else in. So, you create lines. You create barriers between you and the outside world, or between you and another person. Meredith is unable to let Derek in from the very beginning. She’s not the kind of person who divulges all her darkest secrets to a complete stranger. She’s not the kind of person who has relationships. So, she pretty much writes him off. He’s her boss. She doesn’t WANT to be open to the fact that they could be amazing together. In her mind, they can’t be involved, and right now… they never will be.
Except, then there’s the fact that his charm and McDreamy antics have entered her brain. That’s something that can’t be reversed. There really is no turning back now. Because, once Derek Shepherd has gotten into her head and somehow touched her heart… she’s stuck with him. He’s gonna pop up everywhere. He’s gonna say things, and those things are usually laced with sexual innuendo. Cause, lets face it, when he sees something he wants he goes for it. Meredith is gorgeous, feisty, sexy, determined, and bossy. She keeps him in line. He likes to be kept in line 
The downside… Her life is full of crap. Lots and lots of crap! Mer’s Mother has a disease for which there is no cure. She’s an intern and just starting out. The last thing she wants is a distraction. She’s never had a real relationship before, so she’s pretty much written off that idea as well. Men = drunken sex. The last person she expects to run into at work is the guy she slept with… and he also turns out to be her seriously sexy, seriously hot, seriously gorgeous, seriously charming… Boss. Which is bound to create enough dirty thoughts to send her blind.
Derek: Seattle has ferryboats.
Meredith: Yes.
Derek: I didn’t know that. I’ve been living here six weeks; I didn’t know there were ferryboats.
Meredith: Seattle is surrounded by water on three sides.
Derek: Hence the ferryboats. Now I have to like it here. I wasn’t planning on liking it here. I’m from New York. Genetically engineered to dislike everywhere, except Manhattan. I have a thing for ferryboats.
Meredith: I’m not going out with you.
Derek: Did I ask you to go out with me? Do you want to go out with me?
Meredith: I’m not dating you. And I’m definitely not sleeping with you again. You’re my boss.
Derek: I’m your boss’s boss.
Meredith: You’re my teacher. And my teacher’s teacher. And you’re my teacher.
Derek: I’m your sister; I’m your daughter.
Meredith: You’re sexually harassing me.
Derek: I’m riding an elevator.
Meredith: Look, I’m drawing a line. The line is drawn. There’s a big line.
Derek: So, this line. Is it imaginary, or do I need to get you a marker?
All these things, coupled with the fact that she finds his love for Ferry Boats absolutely adorable… Is the precise reason why she ends up making out with McDreamy in an elevator. The hotness, among all the other aspects that make him McDreamy overrides the fact that he’s an authority figure. WHOOPS!
Right here, I love the fact that before she does jump him… you can see that she’s gonna pounce. There’s a fire in Mer’s eyes that just says…’I WANT YOU!’ Thus, the line is crossed. So freaking crossed!
The start of many hot make-out sessions with Derek Shepherd occurs, and Meredith finds herself pinning that hot hunk of a man against the wall in an elevator. It’s a race to get as much kissing in as she can before she gets to her floor.
Afterwards… she’s left breathless and a little bewildered. After the elevator dings … she scrambles to pick up the papers that have been strewn everywhere from her lusty moment. Whilst Derek is left completely confused, yet sufficiently satisfied with the kissing. All he can manage to say is… “So, we’ll talk later?” Poor Der.
Then… it’s back to reality. Back to work. Back to life. Mer’s got a rape victim as a patient. Allison. She’s got no family… no one to claim her. Just like Meredith, she’s only just moved here. It appears the only ones that are fighting for Allison are the doctors of SGH. It’s obvious that Meredith feels a little bit lost and freaked out when she notices the fact that Allison has her shoes. Meredith wouldn’t normally wear these shoes cause they’re uncomfortable… but today… she did. WEIRD! Something like that would freak me out too.
And onto a hilarious moment… Meredith… in charge of a penis. This always cracks me up. Especially when she says “I have to spend the night with my penis.” Then realises what she’s said and tells Alex off before he even tries to make a snide remark. 
Meredith: So anyway, the crap crime scene guy can’t get out here ’til tomorrow, so I get to spend the night with my penis! [pauses] Alex, don’t say it.
Alex: It was too easy anyway.
On this note… I relish the fact that this is a time where I had no reason to openly hate Richard. I have forgotten what it’s like to not be angry with him during an episode.
The way in which Derek gets into Mer’s heart… is by showing how much he wants to fight for Allison to wake up. I think this is something that she notices, even if it’s not said. I know I would notice something like that if I were her. He’s there, sitting beside Allison’s bed for hours, just waiting. That’s an amazing thing for a person to do. He even goes so far as to yell at the rapist. He believes in the good. I love the fact that he cares so much. Also, when Mer is staring right at Allison lost in her own head… Derek asks if she’s ok 
He cares about Meredith already. Heee 
Mer then admits she kissed Derek in the elevator to Cristina. LOL… in typical Cristina form… Mer gets this response.
Meredith: I kissed Derek
Cristina: You kissed Derek?
Meredith: In the elevator.
Cristina: Why’d you kiss him in the elevator?
Meredith: I was having a bad day. I am having a bad day.
Cristina: This is what you do on your bad days, make out with Dr. McDreamy?
Meredith: Well, you know that and carrying around a penis just makes everything seem so shiny and happy
Derek teases her about the earlier elevator make-out session that took place. Hehe. He’s never one to let things go. He likes things put out on display, so that he can stir Mer up. He’s playful. I Love it.
Derek: So we’re kissing but we’re not dating?
Meredith: I knew that was going to come up.
Derek: Don’t get me wrong, I like the kissing. I’m all for the kissing. More kissing, I say.
Meredith: I have no idea what that was about.
Derek: Is it going to happen again? Because if it is, I need to bring breath mints. Put a condom in my wallet.
Meredith: Shut up now. (Derek laughs)
I think it’s a really sad moment when Mer has to lie about the fact that her mother would fly in ‘cowboys from Prague’ like Derek says. The vulnerability in her eyes alone just kills me. She has a big secret that she can’t let out. Deep inside… she really is alone. She really is dark and twisty and for now, no one can change that part about her.
Meredith: There was this baby up in the nursery. He’s brand new. No one’s neglected him or damaged him yet. How do we get from there to here? She’s wearing my shoes and someone’s beat the crap out of her, and she’s got nobody.
I really admire Meredith in this episode. She’s a fighter. She shows she’s willing to put herself on the line for someone who can’t fend for themselves. In this case, it’s a baby. She’s persistent and won’t give up. That’s the Meredith Grey I fell in love with. The one thing I hate is how broken she is when Derek breaks her heart into a million pieces by choosing Addy. That fighter disappeared right up until season 4 started again. I missed that Meredith so much. But now, she’s magnificent.
As the episode draws to a close… We find Mer and Der outside an elevator again. But, we don’t get any show this time. Mer is willing to put that line back in its rightful place… and takes the stairs. Even though she knows she’s fencing herself in by putting that line up… she thinks it’s better to not get hurt and it’s far too dangerous to cross. Cause, she knows she really doesn’t have any self-control. And seriously… who could with Derek Shepherd? I don’t think it would be possible. Cause the sexual tension alone… any time they’re together; well you could cut it with a knife. I do like the ‘fun’ part of this relationship that’s starting. It’s hilarious to watch, and I do actually miss their porny banter.
Derek: So. It’s intense…this thing I have for, ah, ferry boats I mean.
Meredith: I’m so taking the stairs this time.
Derek: No self-control. It’s sad. Really.
I guess one thing rings true throughout this… and that is; no matter how hard something hits you. No matter how vulnerable you are… if fate hands you something as special as what MerDer have, you should hold onto it with two hands, and never let go. Even when it hurts, even when it kills you… the fact that you have someone that loves you at all is what matters. No matter what life throws at Meredith and Derek… they’re stronger than ever before.

!! It is one of my favourite episodes. The elevator kiss.. damn that was freakin’ HOT all of the Meredith and Derek moments are GREAT!!
. The therapy did really good job for our Mer. They are incredible, strong and extordinary together 
.
Season 1 is the best season in my opinion all MerDer. When things were flirty, porny and happy. And before all the bad stuff happened to our favourite couple!
I agree with you I fell in love with that Meredith the bossy Mer, the fighter and I really hate what Derek did to her. She wasn’t the same Meredith after Addison. She was broken and it was so painful for her and for us to watch.. watching and working with the man you love while he is with someone else! But I loved how in season 4 she fought for what she wanted and now Derek is all hers

I have to say, season 5 is my favorite. I’m still of the opinion that everything before it was worth the struggle, cause they are both truly extraordinary together

@MadiLovesMerDer, Hmmm season 5 is my second favourite, I didn’t write that lol.. lots of MerDer too with living together, dancing, cute moments, meeting his mom, proposal, wedding etc

Love the review. & that’s one of my fav episodes
the kiss is super hot! We need sth like that to happen again. I miss those flirty moments too, especially in the elevator hee. But I’m really happy that they’re together for good now
