Sara Talks Grey’s Anatomy & Calzona!

Friday, June 7th, 2013

Hey Gabblers!

Season 9 is soon premiering in New Zealand and after finishing up shooting on Season 9 this is what Sara had to say!

Grey’s stalwart Sara Ramirez, who plays Dr Callie Torres, talks to Isobel Allbury about the on-going effects of the plane crash and reveals why she loves working on the hit medical drama.

Seven years ago, after being offered a role on any ABC show that she wanted, Ramirez chose to join the cast of the already popular drama Grey’s Anatomy as orthopaedic surgeon Callie Torres.

The Mexican-born actress, whose name is pronounced ‘Sada’, clearly made a great choice and as she finishes filming the show’s ninth season she says she has never looked back.

“I had no idea what I was getting into but I’m so glad I did,” she laughs. “Actors are constantly walking around wondering when they’re going to be looking for their next job.

“We are programmed to always be expecting to be without a job. That’s just kind of our nature after a while, so I never expected it to last this long and I’m thrilled that it’s still going strong.”

“It’s never fun when you hear that there’s a potential for cast members to leave… When we read it, it was really sad and really difficult. I know I cried and I think a few other people did. It was very emotional.”

Callie may not have been on the plane but her wife Arizona Robbins was and at the end of the episode she appeared to have a broken leg as a result of the crash. Under strict instructions not to spoil the fallout of the crash, Ramirez hints at what is in store in season nine for Callie and the other characters involved.

There could also be tough times ahead for Callie and Arizona’s relationship but Ramirez believes their relationship is strong enough to get through almost anything, especially  after Callie had a baby with fellow doctor Mark Sloan.

“I think they complement each other, they are like yin and yang,” she says. “I think Arizona has taught her a lot and, in turn, I think Callie has given Arizona a really sweet and loving place to rest her heart… They’ve worked through and survived so much together and I just think that there’s a deep connection there, a bond between them, that developed very quickly and sometimes that’s what’s meant to be.”

Callie was not always intended to be bisexual but Ramirez says this was something she asked of the show’s creator Shonda Rhimes.

“I’ve been immersed in the LGB (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual) community since I was really young,” Ramirez says.

“For me I’m grateful that I grew up without any kind of fear of the LGB community. I actually went to Shonda Rhimes and said ‘If you’re going to have any character go down that road of bisexuality I would love to volunteer Callie, just letting you know as an actor I am comfortable with that.’

“I’m really behind it and I thought it was really exciting and interesting for people to see that journey. I don’t think it’s one we see a lot.

“So she (Shonda) was gung ho and she wrote it in with Erica Hahn and we’ve seen what’s happened since then. It was kind of a no-brainer for me.”

Initially a fan of the show before she was cast, Ramirez is not surprised Grey’s Anatomy has continued to be so popular internationally.

JCap

Day 3: Appearance on The View

Outfit: Roberto Cavalli Jacket, Willow chemise, skirt by Proenza Schouler and shoes by Nicholas Kirkwood.

Hair: Stylist Owen Gould sprayed 1-inch sections of hair with L’Oreal Elnett medium hold hair spray, using a 1.5-inch curling iron wrapped each section leaving about 1 inch at the ends, so they wouldn’t be too curly. The final touch was brushing through the hair with his fingers to give it a soft finish, and a more tousled look.

Makeup: I used a blend of Nano Eyeliner pencils by Sephora in Gold Sand and Iced Brown. I gave the face a light dusting of Chanel Soleil Tan De Chanel Moisturizing bronzing powder. For her lovely pout Nars Velvet Matte pencil in Cruella, blotted for a sheer wash of rich color.

Shonda on Grey’s Season Finale

Friday, May 17th, 2013

Hey Grey’s Army,

Shonda Rhimes has spoken! She chatted with the folks over at Entertainment Weekly about the fates of Webber, Calzona, and Crowen.

What she had to say about Richard:

So have we said goodbye to yet another member of our beloved team of doctors? “That’s such an interesting question! I love that people are asking that question,” Rhimes told EW last night at an event at the  Academy of Television Arts and Sciences that honored the second season finale of her latest hit drama Scandal. “I’m not going to answer it because I like that it’s a question. I will tell you that you will see Jim Pickens again, but I’m not going to answer the question.”

On the upheaval of Calzona:

Rhimes says, “I feel like a lot of LGBT characters on television — and I hopefully don’t fall into this category — are sort of sanitized for our protection. They are happily in love and they hardly ever do anything wrong and they never cheat and they’re never too sexual and they don’t have any other storylines except about them being gay. I felt like I wanted to give them a complex storyline that wasn’t about that.”

Discussing the end of Crowen:

“I think Owen and Christina have been on a very very long journey that’s been really complicated for both of them,” Rhimes says. “I feel like there’s a sense that this is the end of the journey that they’ve been on for two seasons that was sort of messed up by the fact that she was in the plane crash….they were finally forced to have the conversation that neither of them wanted to have and it was a very honest conversation. She walked away and he did not follow, so how they’re going to cope with that is going to be something.”

As per usual with Shonda, I have more questions than answers…

What do you make of what she said about Webber’s fate? How about her thoughts on the effects the plane crash had on Arizona? Do you feel like Crowen is really done or is Shonda going to leave that door open?

What say you???

Yours in Grey’s, Pam Fier

JCap Talks with THR!

Friday, May 17th, 2013

Hey Gabblers!

Check out this post finale Q&A with JCap!

THR: Are you looking forward to the challenges ahead for Callie and Arizona as a couple?
Capshaw: I’m very much looking forward to it. I came on to the show four years ago and it had been my favorite show and I remember part of what I loved about it, which is why I can relate to people taking this story personally. I loved watching the bed hopping, the fun, the irreverence, reverence, how it made you cry and angry. When I came onto the show, the evolution of the character was to get into a relationship and stay in that relationship. A lot of stuff happens around them, but Callie and Arizona’s love was always in tact. I never saw this one coming, so once the story presented itself, I thought it was wonderful opportunity as an actor to play with what the other sides of a person are. Infidelity is horrible, there’s nothing worse than that; it’s devastating. I hope it doesn’t turn into a year of self-flagellation for Arizona. I think you can do something bad and it doesn’t make you a bad person. We are not defined by any one choice. We are the sum of our experiences and we can make bad choice and turn around and do better. I do think that with any kind of infidelity, on some level — unless you’re dealing with a sociopath — there’s always a reason. There will be an exploration of what that reason was and that will give the Grey’s writers fertile ground to play with next season.
