No secret many Grey’s fans are not the happiest with this newest batch of interns. Sarah Drew has a little something to say about it!
Pop quiz: How do you feel about the second-year interns on Grey’s Anatomy? What’s that? Not so favorably, you say?
Sarah Drew has plenty of experience with new-character backlash herself, since April Kepner was once just as new to the scene as Jo, Stephanie, Leah, and Shane are.
And, as Sarah tells Wetpaint Entertainment exclusively, she totally sympathizes.
“For the most part, people hate new people,” Sarah observes. “The fans get very uncomfortable when anybody comes in to interrupt the status quo. Because the fans get used to the way the show runs, they get used to seeing their favorite characters in all the scenes, and then new people come in and now new people are occupying more screentime, and people who have not fully invested in them get annoyed.”
So Sarah gets where we’re coming from, especially because April wasn’t always so likable. But some extreme fans even wished Dr. Kepner dead.
“I absolutely experienced that … Oh my gosh, the amount of people that tweeted or wrote in that I should have been shot in the gunman episode… They wished I’d been shot in the head. People hated me. [Laughs]”
But Sarah says there is light at the end of the tunnel for the recent cast additions, and she commends the writers for devoting more time this season getting us to relate to the newbies.
“That’s just how it goes,” she muses. “When you jump into an established show, you are torn to shreds by the fans until they get to see more sides of you, and we introduce them as slowly as possible in the show so that they’re as palatable as possible so that then you can fall in love with them.”
Sarah also tells us that she’d advise Camilla, Jerrika, Tessa, and Gaius to wait out this “hazing” period: “It can take a good two seasons to make that transition.”
“But I know that for me, as an actress and just as a person who has an ego — like, who has any ego, as we all have an ego of some sort — It was hard,” she continues. “I had to just not look at anything online for a solid two years … And now people love April, so it just takes some time. It just takes some getting used to.”
There you have it, folks — a spot-on fandom diagnosis and prescription from one of our fave TV doctors!
Personally speaking, I am not that big a fan of any of the interns. I’m just not. Heather was an exception to the rule (R.I.P. Mousey). I CAN say that I like Jo with Alex. And I think she’s exceptional as a doctor. I started out liking Stephanie, but once she got with Jackson, things changed for me. But therein lies a bit of my issue with how the interns are being written– connecting them to the characters that Grey’s fans actually care about as a means of giving them importance and increasing their likeability. Is that too harsh to say? What do you think?

Looks like she caught Sarah and Chandra by surprise lol However, looks like Sara is always ready for the camera In other news, the chick in the background does NOT look happy
Glamour was in the house celebrating the 200th Episode with the Cast & Crew last week and got a chance to ask questions we’ve been dying to hear the answers to!
Who has the most difficulty memorizing medical jargon?
Sarah Drew (Dr. April Kepner): Justin Chambers! Honestly, you can see it in every blooper reel in every season! There’s five minutes devoted to him saying, “What’s my line?!” We all die laughing.
Chandra Wilson (Dr. Miranda Bailey): Oooh, he’s gonna kill me, but maybe Kevin McKidd.
Justin Chambers (Dr. Alex Karev): Besides me? Gosh, I think it’s me. I’m on an island all my own.
James Pickens, Jr. (Dr. Richard Webber): Patrick [Dempsey]. I would say Patrick.
Kevin McKidd (Dr. Owen Hunt): Justin! And me too! We’re kinda equal!
Sara Ramirez (Dr. Callie Torres): Ellen [Pompeo]. Actually, Justin Chambers is a better answer. He makes an entire commentary about what’s happening. He’ll say things like, “So much for my Emmy!”
Which cast member is always in a good mood at 5 a.m. call times?
Sarah Drew: Jerrika Hinton. She has a lot of energy and is super enthusiastic. She’s been taking yearbook photos of all the crew, which is so hilarious.
Chandra Wilson: That would be me. Whatever the time is!
Justin Chambers: Chandra or Sarah Drew.
Camilla Luddington: Jerrika Hinton has an energy about her at 5 a.m. that nobody should have. It should be illegal!
James Pickens, Jr.: Pretty much Chandra Wilson. She’s always chipper.
Sara Ramirez: [Laughs] 5 a.m.?! That’s tough! Everybody is dragging their butts in with like slits for eyes. Nobody is awake!
Who is the cast member that takes their work the most seriously?
Chandra Wilson: Sandra Oh. She puts little post-it notes all throughout her script, and I take them and move them all around! It pisses her off! [Laughs]
James Pickens, Jr.: I think Sandra Oh is probably one of the most dedicated actresses. I wish I had her work ethic. And Chandra drives Sandra crazy with her post-its! She’s done it since day one. Drives her crazy!
Kevin McKidd: The obvious answer is Sandra Oh. She has notes all over her scripts, and then Chandra rearranges them! Drives her crazy!
There are plenty more questions at the source link!
I love the fact that Chandra messes with Sandra’s post-its…would love to see what one of those scripts looks like!
