Jackson’s (Jesse Williams) fumble with the spinal screw (which nearly caused a woman’s heart to tear itself apart in Season 8, Episode 9: “Dark Was the Night”) is just another in a long, shameful line of surgical boo-boos the Grey’s Anatomy doctors have made over the years. Yes, most of them are brilliant surgeons, but even the best scalpel-slingers make mistakes. Here are some of the most memorable mess-ups:
6. Tampering with a clinical trial
We know now what Meredith’s (Ellen Pompeo) problem is: she just cares too much! Seems like a pretty harmless flaw to us, but her compassion got her fired when she made sure Richard’s (James Pickens Jr.) wife Adele received Derek’s (Patrick Dempsey) Alzheimer’s drug instead of the placebo in a supposedly “blind” clinical trial. We’re gonna give her a pass for this one, because Richard and Adele are adorable.

This is the recording of what and how it went down. Guest host, Sam, had the honor of moderating the competition which was fraught with alcohol, candy, and Cheetos.

The format was as follows: Three rounds of five “trauma” questions. The team that answered the trauma question correctly, got to go to the OR to score points. The team that lost the trauma question could call for the crash cart if the winning team missed points in the OR, but if the crash cart team also missed them, they would lose the points. After each round, there was a Whipple challenge. The last question was a final wager.

Grey’s Anatomy has always been a show about baggage. It’s been about the scars, the smiles, the promises and the heartbreaks a handful of surgeons carry beside their scalpels. We weren’t privy to all those wounds at the beginning; so, we watched and wondered. We wondered why the characters behaved the way they did and what could have possibly happened to push them into medical school and into each other’s arms. In time, we were told these details and hundreds more, but in learning them, we too found ourselves suffocating beneath baggage.
In a way, that’s the reason why Grey’s Anatomy can never be as good as it once was. We’ve seen these men and women fornicate and fight, cry and make-up too many times. Their motivations and dreams are now common currency, obscuring our abilities to be affected behind dozens of remember-whens. Remember when we finally met the man that ruined Derek and Addison’s marriage? Remember when Meredith confronted her father for the first time? Remember when George slept with the woman of his dreams?
All of those remember-when’s started out as I-wonder-why’s. Teased, hinted at and slowly explored for months, these broad questions lingered over Seattle Grace, sometimes quietly in gossip-laden whispers and sometimes more directly in conversations between friends and lovers. Each was entitled to its own moment, and each got one, somehow encapsulated within forty-three minutes. Entitled “Yesterday”, Grey’s Anatomy’s greatest episode aired partway through the second season. It didn’t feature bomb scares or main character deaths or exam failures. It simply turned three of the biggest I-wonder-why’s into three incredible remember-when’s and still found time to offer three fascinating medical cases perfectly reminiscent of the Grey’s formula we’ve all come to love.
It seems like there shouldn’t have been enough time to feature all of that in a single episode, but Grey’s has always had a wonderful way of using its patients as conduits to advance the overarching plot. In “Yesterday”, we’re given three strangers. The first, a good-hearted teenager with facial tumors and a desire to finally appear normal, gives dirty mistress plastic surgeon Mark Sloan an excuse to stick around after Derek coldcocks him. The second, a scared asshole with a dying dream of telling those who betrayed him off, gives Meredith the impulse she needs to finally confront her father. And the last patient, a woman who can’t stop having orgasms, operates as the final push for George to tell Meredith how he feels.
None of the actions these men and women inspire work out for the characters. Mark’s patient dies on the operating table. Meredith tracks down her father, only to find a sad and lonely man at a loss for words, and George gets exactly what he wants, which is a whole lot lonelier than what he had. It’s a team failure from every angle, and it’s really goddamn sad. These moments were all coming for a long time. We needed to meet Mark. We needed to put a face to Thatcher, and we needed to be reminded why guys like George are better off without girls like Meredith. Their arrivals gave us three unforgettable remember-whens, but they also brought more I-wonder-why’s, paving the way for the subsequent season and a half which proved the strongest Grey’s ever gave us.
“Yesterday” starts with a punch and ends with a fuck. In between, it unloads a little bit of its characters’ baggage and places it on us. The repeating of that process might have eventually ruined Grey’s Anatomy, but to produce an episode like this, it was worth it.

Let me first take the time to wish you all a wonderful 2012. May it be full of lots of exciting moments, and lots of happiness after watching the awesome expected rest of Season Eight of Grey’s Anatomy.
It seem’s that Seattle-Grace Mercy West is not always the best hospital to be operated in. There’s been a few mistakes can make any viewer wonder if they’d like to be operated on at SG-MW Hospital. Below is an interesting article by Mr. Claredon on what he thinks are the worst medical mistakes to occur on Grey’s.

5. Lacerating a bowel
Even the best surgeons have to know when to put down the scalpel and scrub out. Case in point: Dr. Margaret Campbell. Seattle Grace’s first female surgeon, realized she had overstayed her welcome when she lacerated a patient’s bowel while performing a routine surgery. Luckily, Owen (Kevin McKidd) was there to convince her to exit with (some) dignity.4. Practicing operations on one another
Though no one could replace Cristina (Sandra Oh) in the BFF department, we were all prepared to give Meredith’s college friend Sadie a chance when she came to Seattle Grace. But then Sadie and the other boneheaded surgical interns started practicing procedures on themselves. First of all, ouch; and second, stupid! Team M.A.G.I.C. was never that dumb.3. Operating with a faulty hand
When you’re the one of the best cardiothoracic surgeons in the country, you’re gonna be bummed when a stray bullet incapacitates your hand. But Burke, you should have stayed out of the OR until you had full function back. You’re lucky you had Cristina to watch out for you, because you could’ve killed someone… or worse, ended your career!
2. Sending the wrong patient to surgery
A wise man once said, “With great power comes great responsibility.” (And by “wise man”, we mean one of those Spider-Man movies.) So, April Kepner (Sarah Drew), being promoted to Chief Resident is your great power. Not sending hapless patients to the wrong surgeries is your great responsibility. At least you realized your blooper in time and sprinted to the OR, but still…1. Cutting the LVAD wire
This is why love and medicine shouldn’t mix. Oh sure, we were swooning over Denny’s charm, his considerable scruff, and his witty Dirty Scrabble skills, too. But to cut the man’s LVAD wire to put him first in line on the heart transplant list? Tsk tsk, Izzie (Katherine Hiegl). But we can’t chide her too much, because it was all for naught and because our hearts broke when Denny done died
