Song Beneath the Song

10.5 “I Bet It Stung”

A Review By: @safeaudme

I know you plan out everything that you want to say

I wish that we didn’t have to go about things this way

I love the rock and roll, I love the rock and roll

Don’t get so uptight, don’t get so uptight

Go, go away

Tell me you love me like you think you want to be loved

Pull on my hand and say, please just let’s make it this way

I love the rock and roll, I love the rock and roll

Don’t get so uptight, don’t get so uptight

Go, go away

Tegan and Sara, “I Bet It Stung”

Remember that kid in third grade who said you couldn’t play kickball with the boys, because boys were better? Remember what he said after? “The truth hurts!” Oh, just me? Never mind. But you’ve heard that phrase, correct? Of course, you have. It’s that extra kick to the emotional groin that every mean kid in primary school dishes out. It tends to fade with the “I know you are, but what am I” comebacks. They fade because we realize what they’re calling the truth is distorted at best. We recognize the maliciousness and ignore it. But what about those other times? The very rare moment when someone who loves you enough to tell you the truth…does? Ouch. Grab the heart bandaids and the tissues.

In 10.5, we’re given a theme that may serve as our season theme: we are who we choose to be; not who we wish to be. To quote Albus Dumbledore, “It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” There’s truth here, and it hurts! Meredith has the makings of a great surgeon but chose to be a mom instead. The problem with small choices is that they tend to have big consequences down the road. Grey’s season ten is forming a solid foundation of paying for choices. Our characters are having to experience the consequences of choices made seasons ago, and for the most part they’ve been rewarded. However, for every decision, there’s an opportunity cost. You have to give up something to pursue something else. Cristina realized this early on in the series. Her dream of being the surgeon of her generation was worth it all, even sacrificing the love of her life upon the altar of her dream. But it hurts. Oh, how it hurts.

The series is starting to return to Meredith as Everyman. We are shifting from the audience looking through Callie’s eyes in S9 to Meredith’s eyes in S10. The transition is going to be a little bumpy, so hang on. My colleague, Kay, over at @TSGPodcast, had a marvelous observation. A few weeks ago, she said that she had trouble relating to Meredith since Meredith was in a perfect marriage, dream house, perfect kids, perfect career…. She had it all! She is the American Myth! Thus, Callie’s dirty-sexy flawed life was the most relatable. Until now.

My dear Kay has her wish with 10.5. A working mom having to choose between work and family is an all-too-familiar theme, and one that Meredith isn’t even aware she’s in its grasp. Cristina loves Meredith enough to tell her the truth: she is not a bad mother like Ellis Grey, but she’s not an elite surgeon like her either. OUCH! It cuts Meredith deeper than a ten blade through a layer of fat, because Cristina is right. Bailey and Torres gave their kids to daycare and to interns (poor George) while still pursuing being rockstars in the OR. However, Cristina is quick to point out that Meredith’s priorities are not inferior to being an elite surgeon, but she needs to adjust her expectations. It’s said with the same love Mama Avery uses to tell Richard “I love you, but I will not coddle you.”

Hey Gabblers!

Have you heard the podcast? The Ladies/Owners of GG (Lisa & Liv) participated in a “test your knowledge of Grey’s Anatomy” trivia showdown versus the Ladies (Amanda & Kay) of the Seriously Grey’s Podcast!

Throwdown

This is the recording of what and how it went down. Guest host, Sam, had the honor of moderating the competition which was fraught with alcohol, candy, and Cheetos.

Seriously Grey’s Showdown Podcast

The format was as follows: Three rounds of five “trauma” questions. The team that answered the trauma question correctly, got to go to the OR to score points. The team that lost the trauma question could call for the crash cart if the winning team missed points in the OR, but if the crash cart team also missed them, they would lose the points. After each round, there was a Whipple challenge. The last question was a final wager.
