The title says it all. Everybody’s crying. This is going to be harder than I thought it was going to be. I came in, thinking I had steeled myself to the reality that Sandra Oh is leaving this show and that I was ready to let go of this show – and say a final, bittersweet farewell to Cristina and Owen. However, these past few episodes have proven that I am still attached to these two, which has honestly been a surprising emotional response.
My dear Cristina and Owen fans,
I hope you’ve all had a wonderful summer. I know that we look upon Season 10 with sadness now that we know of Sandra Oh’s decision to leave the show. But we have a full season’s worth of Cristina Yang before we have to say goodbye. And that means, we have 24 episodes to come to terms with the fact that the romance we saw begin with a surprising and passionate kiss back in season 5 will most likely come to an end.
There’s something to be said about having time to prepare yourself, and there is so much we can see happen in 24 episodes. Maybe it’s not what we had dreamed for them when Cristina and Owen first came into existence, but it’s something. (And let’s face it, we all realized that we weren’t going to get what we wanted in season 6.)
I think we all saw this coming. We’ve been fans of this show for too long not to know how Shonda operates. No couple can stay happy forever — except, possibly Meredith and Derek. I mean, look at Callie and Arizona, even they are not safe from the drama. (Though they’ve avoided the full extent of “Shonda relationship drama” for a long, long time.) So, despite having a nice, long string of episodes where Cristina and Owen have been very much together and supportive of each other in the way that we’ve always wanted them to be when they were married.
I’m really sorry I’ve been missing in action for the past month or so. For those of you who follow me on Twitter, you’ve probably realized that I’ve gotten a new gig as a freelance writer/film intern. And unfortunately, keeping up with those deadlines has forced me to put my Cristina and Owen reviews on the backburner while I appeased my editors. But things have calmed down for the moment, and I’m going to lump a whopping seven episodes into one review. Hopefully, the wait has been worth the while. (Also, I should mention that you can thank the wonderful Grey’s Gabble owners for gently reminding me that I was way past due for a review. These lovely ladies have been incredibly supportive and understanding as my schedule blew up. So, huge shout out to Lisa and Liv!)
Well, that last episode brought a little bit of holiday cheer, didn’t it? I know we’ve been at this too long to think that all their problems are over, but at least it seems they’re off to a good start toward reconciliation. Apparently, both Sandra Oh and Kevin McKidd were telling the truth that the divorce proceedings were ultimately a good thing for their relationship – a way for them to start afresh.
