Grey’s Lays Low; Scandal’s Sky High

Friday, May 17th, 2013

Hey Grey’s Fans,

I’ve got a bit of whiplash from Thursday night’s back to back season finales of Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal. But it looks like the night ended up being a mixed bag for Shondaland, ratings wise.

Grey’s Anatomy had its least-watched season finale ever, up against a larger amount of competition than usual, as the one-hour finale went head-to-head with the American Idol season finale, The Office series finale, and the Elementary season finale. As a result, the episode scored a 3.0 in the key demo and 8.6 million viewers – not only the lowest-rated Grey’s finale ever, but slightly down from its ratings for last week’s episode.

Scandal fared much better, once again outscoring Grey’s Anatomy in all areas. The show’s demo rating was flat with last week’s, again reaching a 3.2 in the key 18-49 demo range, but the audience was the largest to date as 9.1 million viewers tuned in to see Olivia Pope put the white hat back on. This also marked the first time that Scandal had a larger audience than Elementary, with which the show has been competing since the beginning of the season.

American Idol actually won the night’s coveted 18-49 demographic (14.9 million viewers) and Grey’s Anatomy (8.63 million viewers) came in third behind Elementary (9.11 million viewers). This is a bit shocking because Grey’s has been consistently winning that timeslot with that particular demographic for quite awhile. Also, it looks as if Scandal isn’t completely reliant on Grey’s lead-in as it had approximately 500,000 more viewers.

I have a theory to explain the show’s sudden drop but I’m more curious to know what you think! Hit up the comments box below and we’ll rap about it!

UPDATED: Grey’s Anatomy ratings were adjusted up a tenth of a point, just barely beating out Elementary making them second for the night. However, it was still the lowest rated Grey’s finale ever.

GA One of TV Top Dramas

Tuesday, May 7th, 2013

Hey, fab Gabblers!

No secret Grey’s Anatomy has once again delivered quite the impressive season this year. So much so that they’ve earned a spot with Variety as being one of this year’s TV top dramas!

Plenty has changed this season, but one thing hasn’t: “Grey’s Anatomy” and “NCIS” are broadcast TV’s top dramas.

In a season lacking any true new breakout hourlongs, nothing was able to dethrone these vets, which have aired a combined 19 seasons. Both were at the top of their game last week too as they approach their finales, rising about 10% week-to-week, according to Nielsen, and finishing as the top-rated dramas among young adults for the first full week of the May sweep.

Whoo hoo!!! Go GA! I, for one, have definitely been enjoying this season. And although I’m a bit on pins and needles as I brace myself for another Shondaland finale, I’m more prouder than ever to say that I’m a fan of Grey’s Anatomy! Do you think GA has rightly earned this notable this year?

Giddy up, Grey’s Peeps!

Grey’s Anatomy won the all important 18-49 demographic again last night with, “Do You Believe In Magic?” Overnight ratings reveal the show pulled in 8.5 million viewers which is a significant increase from last week’s 8.1 million viewers.

Spiking over its Adult 18-49 lead-in (+164%) at 9pm and growing week to week, ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy surged to rank as the #1 series in its hour for its 5th straight original, beating CBS’ Person Of Interest by 21%, Fox’s Idol-driven Glee by 61% and NBC’s comedies by 71% (The Office/Parks and Recreation season finale). Grey’s was up over the prior week by 7% in Adults 18-49 to equal a 6-week high – since 3/21/13. In addition the showmatched its top Women 18-34 number since February – since 2/21/13.

Scandal also won its 10pm time slot. I think I’m going to start a petition to officially recognize Thursday as Shondaday.

Grey’s Wins Again!

Friday, April 26th, 2013

Greetings Grey’s Peeps!

Looks like Grey’s Anatomy is at it again! After a three week hiatus, Grey’s Anatomy returned with “Sleeping Monster” to win its 9pm time slot on Thursday night. With 8.1 million viewers, the show beat out  Glee (Fox), The Office (NBC), Parks & Recreation (NBC) and Person of Interest (CBS) to take the number one slot in the all important 18-49 age demographic.

More than doubling its Adult 18-49 lead-in (+145%) at 9pm, ABC‘s Grey’s Anatomy shot up to win The Hour for its 4th straight original, beating CBS‘ Person of Interest by 13%, Fox‘s Idol-led Glee 50% and NBC‘s comedies by 80% (The Office/Parks and Recreation).

For more info on how Thursday night shook out, take a peek at the source above.

Although it seems like 8 million viewers is a little low to start off May Sweeps, the important thing is that Grey’s was number one! Giddy up!
