Calzona’s Bubble: A Review of 9.24 “Perfect Storm” By @sportsfan12921
By The GG Admin | May 19, 2013
Hello Gabblers,
So, here we are, at the end of another season of Grey’s. And it is very clear our girls are in a bad place, I still believe they are endgame and I’ll get into that at the end of my review, but for now, here we go: They aren’t in scenes together until the end so forgive the bouncing around. Overall episode note: the word “fine”, which is Grey’s speak for it’s all about to be everything but…. used so many times in this ep that I yelled at the TV. And the opening titles with the lightening and flashing between white and black…very cool. And again, this episode required me looking at it from a shipper’s and show fan view.
We see Callie first, when she happily tells April about pinning her ring inside her scrub top. While this comes in to play in a huge way later, for me here, it made my heart ache a little…. what happened isn’t even on Callie’s radar. Yes, she’s wondering where Arizona is but her being with Lauren isn’t a thought. And we cut to the on call room where Arizona is getting dressed, because yes, she did have sex with Lauren. Yup, I will admit I had hoped she wouldn’t go that far, but she did. And now she can’t wait to get away from Lauren. As for Lauren, I really, really don’t like her. She’s all calm and relaxed, and plain old doesn’t care that Arizona is married. Lauren offers to help in the NICU and Arizona tells her no, and gets out of the room quickly.
The NICU: Arizona arrives to an understaffed NICU and tells Alex, Jo and Stephanie about keeping the makers of the tiny humans happy. It’s a callback to S6 finale when she gave the same speech about the lockdown. Lauren shows up to help, and Arizona obviously doesn’t want her there. Alex lets her help..” keep the makers of the tiny humans happy, right?” I think he senses something is up but not sure exactly what. And the NICU is in trouble, there are no spare batteries for the ventilators. No generators, no batteries, things are about to get intense. And a side note: Alex’s everything’s fine smile: creepy.
Back to the front of the hospital and while Callie is telling a patient that she can’t discharge him and along comes a flying bus, actually a crashing one but you get the picture….. and notice, Callie is right at the front of the people running to it. They evacuate the passengers, except the one Hunt and Avery go back for.
Arizona and Alex in the supply closet. Arizona confesses about Lauren to Alex, and Alex tells her she’s not the most horrible person standing in that closet. Now, I took a few things from this scene: the first being that yes, Arizona has been struggling for a while. Why do I say that? Because having her stuff together Arizona would never not have spare batteries on hand. She’s been back at work, yes, but she hasn’t completely been herself there either. The second: I think that we will get more of the Arizona/Alex relationship in S10, but with them more as colleagues than teacher/student. Of course at this point, I realize that my ability to guess what the Grey’s writers are going to do is completely shot. They have no batteries and Alex asks what they are going to do…. Arizona has no idea. Again, a sign that while she is standing there, she isn’t all there.
Back in the NICU the batteries are starting to go as Derek arrives with the baby. Yeah, still don’t like Lauren, but again she is there as pre-crash Arizona… when she says “We can do this” reminded me of Arizona knowing Ruby needed surgery and doing it in an exam room in S6 finale. The one of the dads, Tim, notices the low battery light and announces it to the entire NICU. Panic of course sets in. Derek steps in and suggests the parents do the bagging. We are reminded again that Arizona isn’t quite herself, needing Derek to step in like that.
Callie is taking care of Jackson and has to get April to leave the area. Can we just take a moment and love how hardcore Callie is through this… Steady, calm and focused. Callie as an admin person, not so much. Callie in doctor mode: awesome. And while not seen a lot, it’s a telling contrast to Arizona. While Arizona constantly seems to be overwhelmed by the effects of the storm, Callie is indeed focused and zoned in.

It’s A MerDer World: Review of “Readiness Is All” by @PamFier
By PamFier | May 19, 2013
“They hit you out of nowhere. When bad things come, they come suddenly, without warning. We rarely get to see the catastrophe coming, no matter how well we try to prepare for it. We do our very best, but sometimes, it’s just not good enough. We buckle our seat belts, we wear a helmet, we stick to the lighted paths. We try to be safe. We try so hard to protect ourselves, but it doesn’t make a damn bit of difference, ’cause when the bad things come, they come out of nowhere. The bad things come suddenly, with no warning. But we forget that sometimes, that’s how the good things come too.”
With that, my friends, I don’t think Meredith Grey has ever said truer words. This monologue pretty much set up the twists and turns of the two part season finale but also served as QUITE the warning for us as the viewers…
Get your Doomsday bug out bags ready to go! The storm is coming! The storm is coming! The storm is cooooooommmmming!
The storm is coming and Owen wants everyone to cancel any elective surgeries which Meredith is not feeling at all. Worrywart Derek says it’d be good for her to cancel some of her surgeries so she can slow down her schedule. Meredith replies indignantly, “I’m pregnant, not sick.” Derek comes back with the information that she is a mere three weeks from her due date and is pretty much ready to pop. Meredith is not even trying to hear it and I can almost hear her say to herself, “I’m gonna do my thang! I’m Meredith Grey. I do what I want!” Just then Alex comes in and pulls Derek away from the big all staff meeting saying he needs help. He tells Derek that he brought someone in a few hours ago, he’s had a CT scan, but he wanted Derek to check him out personally. It’s Jason Myers and it pretty much looks like he’s had his ass handed to him. He implores for Derek to save him. Ruh-oh.
Owen catches Meredith in the elevator and they have this really awkward interaction where Owen asks her how did she and Derek know they wanted to adopt Zola. I say this was awkward because Owen and Meredith don’t interact very much and even she seemed surprised that he was running to catch up with her in the elevator. Not only that but he asks about Zola’s adoption. Meredith wonders why he’s asking and if he’s considering adopting. Owen brushes it off as a random thought and jets off making me think he should’ve just taken the stairs.
A curtain opens up to reveal Heather, Alex, and Derek in Jason’s makeshift room. Derek asks her what she sees and the ever charming Heather answers she sees that “someone super messed him up.” It’s so funny to me that she interacts with Derek like a casual acquaintance instead of the intimidating Neuro God that Derek he is. I guess Derek doesn’t find it as hilarious as I did because he snaps at her to answer like a doctor and she replies with the maladies they face: temporal bone fracture with an epidural hemorrhage that needs to be taken care of “like, yesterday.” Derek sends her to book an OR leaving him to ask Alex what happened to Jason and who did it. Alex responds with a plea to not let him die. Pretty much because that will put a murder on our plates and nobody has time for that.
Meredith, Callie, and April are all on the case of a construction worker who was blown away by the impending storm’s winds and got himself impaled on some gnarly looking rods. Anyone think of the “Into You Like A Train” episode from season two? Was that just me? Oh ok. The patient, Shish Kabob aka Leon, says they’ll need a specific tool to get the rods out which the intern no one really likes runs to fetch. Owen and Ben ask her what she’s doing with it and they soon realize that power tools in an OR isn’t the best idea. Just in the nick of time, they both burst in saying they could blown up the room with all the sparks and oxygen. Meredith mentions that she’s been in this situation before. Kinda crazy that Meredith could find herself in this position again, right?
RIP Dylan Young.

It’s A MerDer World: Review of “Perfect Storm” by @PamFier
By PamFier | May 19, 2013
It’s raining pain! Oh crap no!
It’s raining pain! Bring the meds!
I’m gonna go out to run and let myself get
Absolutely soaking wet (with sweat)!
It’s raining pain! Damn this hurts!
It’s raining pain! I hate this storm!
It’s dark, dank, lean, and obscene!
Rough and tough and strong and mean!
…and if you don’t know what song I’m referring to there, you must go back to Pop Music 101. Stat.
The opening shot of “Perfect Storm” is brilliant. Derek and Cristina slo-mo running was captivating but more on that later. Five hours earlier, Derek’s massaging Meredith’s back as Cristina bursts through the door not the least bit surprised that Meredith has gone into labor during the storm of the century. She goes into birth plan execution mode and somehow ends up translating Meredith’s words to Derek like he can’t hear her. He sighs, “Are you going to do this the whole time?” and Cristina’s reaction was priceless. I never knew someone could say “duh” with just a look.
Dr. Connie, Meredith’s OB, enters and right away Cristina tells her that Meredith doesn’t want any drugs. Derek pipes in that there’s a doctor on standby to administer pain medication just in case which almost ends up into a childish back and forth between the two. Meredith just wants to push this kid out but she can’t because Dr. Connie can feel the baby’s face and that’s no good. She says that Meredith will have to deliver via Caesarean section to minimize the danger to them both. As Meredith and Derek start to soak in the drastic change to their birth plan, the lights go out. Cristina is called away and she makes Shane take her place holding Meredith’s hand until she can return. Derek asks what the risks of a natural childbirth would be and Meredith wants the nitty gritty of it all because if something horrible is going to happen, it’s going to happen to her. Connie basically tells them the baby can break its neck and die but Derek continues to challenge her, especially since they’d have to do the procedure in the dark. Derek, you are a neurosurgeon, not an OB. Take a seat and let this woman do her job, please.
The C-section After Dark is underway and Meredith and Derek take this time to go over baby names (Wayne? Ew. Sebastian? Gag). The ever tactful Heather busts in with “you’re operating in the dark? On your wife?” Way to add more salt to that wound, Brooks. Right before Connie makes the cut, Meredith tells Derek she’s scared. He answers with “everything will be fine.” He should know better than to say such a thing because nothing is ever fine with these two. Derek tells Connie she better not mess them up and I could’ve sworn we told Derek to take a seat and let this woman work!
McFetus comes out and he is…McQuiet. Oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no. Something is wrong! Nope, just kidding. Baby Grey-Shepherd is alive and miraculously clean for being just born. But his breathing is shallow and his stats are low so off to the NICU he goes. Uh-oh is all I have to say. They don’t know what a you-know-what storm it is up there right now.
As Dr. Connie is stitching her back up, Meredith seeks some kind of reassurance from Shane and Heather that the baby is really ok. They both hem and haw with uncertainty when they get schooled by Dr. Connie on what to say and what not to say to women who have just given birth. She gets pulled away to deal with another birthing emergency and, with Meredith’s permission, leaves Shane to close her up.
What could possibly go wrong?
Um, pretty much everything. Meredith starts bleeding out and Shane can’t find where it’s coming from. Meredith, too gangsta for words, knows the cause is from that nasty fall down the stairs and makes Shane open her back up to find the bleed. She tells him it’s a basic cut and tells him not to let her bleed out on the table. Shane is a blubbering hesitant mess and Meredith is like, “Motherfu…do it now!”
